I also haven't had a bad experience at any of the character meals I've been to. Some of the "easier" reservations to get would be at Hollywood and Vine in the Disney-MGM Studios (they serve breakfast and lunch with the characters), Ohana's Character Breakfast at the Polynesian and Cape May Character Breakfast at the Beach Club. All three of those locations can be booked 120 days in advance.

I think the best time to get though to make seating arrangements would be around 7:30am (Orlando time) after the daily Cinderella rush and before the travel agencies open and start calling in. I would think you would get right through to someone without any wait at that time.

You can't reserve your way into the parks on the 4th of July and more than likely the Magic Kingdom will close to capacity on that day. If you want to brave the crowds get there early.
