Tom, this is perhaps the best trip report I have ever read in all of my month-and-a-half at DC, and in it you haven't even arrived south of the Mason-Dixon Line! I am anxiously awaiting the second installment. In fact, I may disregard my various obligations today so that I can watch over the forum and be the first to read Chapter 2!
One thought struck me, however, in your paragraph regarding the fire alarm at your London hotel. Let me have the privilege of informing you that when we Americans are spending time in the airport parking lot at 2:30 in the morning (whether by unfortunate incident or recreationally), we ALWAYS wear paper-thin underpants and a trench coat! To do it any other way would simply be unheard of -- practically punishable by jail time.
So you are more American than you thought.
And now, please, sit at your keyboard and get to work on the next episode!
