Don't hit preview post, just hit submit thread. It will take you right to the screen when you set up the poll.

So basically, type in the number of choices you would like, hit the link or whatever it is that says you want a poll, and hit submit thread. After you submit it, you will be taken to the poll set up page, and then click a button that says something like submit thread.... I don't remember what it is called. lol
