We take ours with us so that if there is an emergency at home, we can be reached. On our last trip we left them in the hotel safe and used Walkie Talkies to communicate in the parks. Since we have changed plans on our phones we now have nationwide coverage, so we will leave the walkie talkies at home and communicate with each other using our cell phones. In my opinion, that is the best way to be able to meet up quickly when my oldest must play Who Wants to Be a Millionaire while my youngest has to go to the Playhouse Disney show and neither wants to do what the other wants. (That actually happened last trip.)
