We had something simialr happen several years ago. A clerk at a store got my account number for my Master Card off of the store's copy of my receipt. I had no idea until I got my credit card bill and noticed several hundred dollars worth of purchases at a rent to own store. I called the credit card company to let them know that I did not rent anything from a rent to own store, they told me that since my statement there had been 10 more transactions. They closed that account and got me a new card, but I am still fighting to get the disputed charges and acount off of my credit report. It still shows up as unresolved. Needless to say I quit using that company completely, but I don't like having that show up on my credit report. When we bought our house, we just had to show the mortgage company all of our documentation and letters that we had showing that this was not our doing and they did not hold it against us.
