Just a little color coding to help you out (at least this is how it is at WDW):
Yellow Lanyard: the CM will trade with anyone
Green Lanyard: the CM will only trade with children

Ooh yes thank you for mentioning this. It's a little embarrassing to walk up to a CM with a green lanyard and have them give you a really funny look. Green = kids only.
