The basket is a great idea. If there are two adults on the trip, how about after check-in one adult sneeks off to the room and leaves the basket and decorates the room window. While the other takes the kids to the food court or to roam around the gift shop or pool. Won't they be surprised to have a decorated room!!
I decorated our window once for DH birthday. It was great!

Will you have enough time to hopover to DTD or Boardwalk? Boardwalk has nighttime street entertainment and if timed right, you can even see some of the fireworks at Epcot. DTD is open late and is a bus ride away from the resorts.
