We usually stay at the Red Roof as well; we really like the rooms, rates, and the staff is very friendly. The walk isn't too awful, but it certainly isn't right across the street like some hotels. Last time we came down, we used Priceline, and got the Hilton for like, $50/night or something; truly a great bargain!
Everyone raves about the Candy Cane Inn, which is about a block and a half away or so, if that. They are a bit closer to $100/night or so, not sure exactly, as I haven't stayed there (the wife did, but when she was younger).
