I've never personally stayed there but a friend was staying at Candy Cane Inn when I visited several years ago and I got to stop and see it, it was really nice. Her room was spacious and pretty. I think I even remember her having a kitchenette in her room, or at least a microwave, etc. I would stay there if I had to stay off property.

Also, one of my co-workers stayed at the Radisson Hotel-Maingate last June and said she'd definately go back. Actually, I think they are in September.

Although, don't rule out Paradise Pier and the Disneyland Hotel. You might be pleasantly surprised with the prices on standard view rooms, especially if you can find a code! Good luck!
