I wouldn't let the rain thing be a deterrent. Summer rain is the norm every afternoon at that time of year. Just plan for the deluge in the afternoon and work around it. Carry your umbrella/poncho and keep going. It actually feels good to have the rain cool it down in the afternoon. It also reduces the park crowds too! And it doesn't last long either.

After the first 2 weeks of August, you can expect park attendance to drop as the southern schools go back in August.
