I'm guessing they were Mennonites, who have much more latitude for these types of things--even though both groups have the weird facial hair.
As to the whole identity theft thing, I have a buddy who works IT for a bank. He said in the old days you were told to change your pass word frequently and make it so many characters long. However, in today's technology, anything but the most complicated passwords can be hacked in under 30 seconds with someone using the right tools.
