The lanyards CM's use to trade are random in a bin in the back. Department heads (sorry, don't know the right term for them) regularly ensure that there are good Cast Lanyard pins on the lanyards. They also make sure most lanyards carry the "junk" pins that people buy in bulk on ebay.*

CM's are not required to wear a lanyard, but are encouraged to wear them to trade/interact with the public. (and ride operators are not allowed to wear them). In other words, if you see a CM wearing a lanyard, they WANT to trade/interact with you.


*I once went to WDW with 50 Millenium Celebration pins I bought off ebay. It seemed most CM's were wearing the pin, and they are not allowed to trade for a pin they are already wearing. I actually had fun with the goal of hunting for CM's I could trade with for ANY pin. We were at WDW for 7 days--I got rid of my last pin as we were leaving the resort on our last day!
