I'm sure it has something to do with the high % that Amex charges the vendors. Many retailers don't take Amex because of that reason.
That really stinks! I'm sorry you have to deal with the brunt of it. Hopefully they will be able to negotiate a lower rate and re-instate Amex as an accepted form of payment.
