Re: DD allergic to the sun!

You have hope that this is will not affect your trip!

About 3 years ago I got Sun Poisoning in Maui. This was basically an itchy rash. I got it on my hands mainly. I stayed out of the sun as much as possible and wore sunscreen that week. I have NEVER had it again.

But, for sure check with your doctor.

Re: DD allergic to the sun!

The very first thing I would do is contact her pediatrician, get her a checkup and follow his advice. Once you know exactly what you have to do, you can contact Disney with your requests and take it from there. Hopefully this is just a one-time thing. Good luck!

Re: DD allergic to the sun!

All of the above posters are correct. Make sure to get it diagnosed! I remember they did an EHM for a girl who had this condition once. Also, if you need it I can look up the line of clothing that is designed to be Sun protection.....

Re: DD allergic to the sun!

Just a thought to throw out - did you rule out the sunscreen as a possibility? Many people are allergic to sunscreen, and there are a few hypoallergenic brands on the market. I think Avon sells one of them.

Right Start and One Step Ahead/Leaps and Bounds have always sold lightweight UV long sleeved/long legged sun protection clothing. I'd stock up there, not just for Disney, but for anytime you go out in the sun.

Finally, definitely get a disabilities pass for your dd, and equip your stroller with as much sun protection as possible. Other than that, I'd consider hitting the parks only at night, and plan something indoors during the day. Perhaps you can adjust your schedule so that you sleep later and stay up later (till closing) so you have as much time as possible in the parks. That's not so hard to do with the blackout drapes the hotels rooms have. During the day, you can explore what the resorts have to offer indoors, like ps's at Chef Mickey's or somewhere, or maybe an indoor pool somewhere, using the monorail as transportation....just some ideas!

Re: DD allergic to the sun!

I honestly have no suggestions. I'm just wondering, how extensive is the allergic reaction? To the point where she needs to have one of those NASA-like suits? Or is it tolerable to an extent?

Has it happened forever or just recently?
I asked because my DD had the exact same rash when we were at WDW and the month following. I thought the same thing. Turns out she had Fifths Disease. Very contagious, not a big deal. Hallmark sympton is a lacey rash that becomes very prominent in the sun.

Just a thought....I'm hoping Karlie is not allergic to the sun!

Not a big deal unless you're pregnant... It's fatal to fetuses.

But I agree - both of my kids have had this and I didn't even know it until it was over and got the letter about the "outbreak" from the school. I didn't even think twice about why my ds was splotchy for a few days and then dd was a couple of weeks later.

Is Roseola a possibility as well? Has she had a fever recently? The rash appears as soon as the fever has gone. My son had this, and like the Fifth's Disease, I didn't know it until it was over.

Re: DD allergic to the sun!

It has happened about 3 times. The last time we were in FL it was really bad. She got it again this week when she was at Girl Sout day camp and in the sun all day. It's not that big of a deal to keep her inside here at home but when she is out for long periods in sun/heat she breaks out and is generally miserable. The dr. said to give her benadryl and keep her out of the sun and heat.

Re: DD allergic to the sun!

karliebug,

did you tell your doctor about your plans for disneyworld? ask for their advice on what to do. maybe there is something that can be given for this trip or the umbrella might not be a bad idea. i have been allergic to the sun my entire life. i also get a huge hivey rash on my entire body and i get some other symptoms. how long was your daughter exposed to the sun before her hives came?

Re: DD allergic to the sun!

My 3.5 yr old is as irish as they come...red hair, blue eyes, fair skin. It seems like he is more sensitive to the heat...not so much the sun. He can be outside playing and he will get heat rash or prickly heat (we live in S Florida so it is almost a daily occurence). As soon as he goes in the a/c and his body cools down the rash goes away. I use to think it was from the baby sunscreens then we switch to children's bullfrog but he still gets the rash, especially around the collar area. When he is in in really hot temperatures (like the beach or standing in line at WDW in May) he becomes one big blotch. Where ever he has clothing on, underneath he gets the blotchy hivey rash. Mostly his back, chest, and below the waist. I spoke to the ped and the dermatologist and there isnt much we can do to prevent it other then to keep him in from the heat. We still let him play outside but we dont go to the beach. If we are at a pool we constantly are checking him. And we only go to WDW in the months of late September - late March.

I have the same problem as your DD. I am a 41 year old woman. I have had this problem since my early 20's. I have been to my doctor and dermatologist. I am allergic to the sun and when out in the sun I break out in a very itchy hivey type rash. We recently went to WDW in April 2005 and I broke out in another rash. This breakout was the worst I have had in many years. Both my legs, arms, chest and back were covered with this rash. It was very uncomfortable, itchy and made my skin very hot. I do apply 50 sunscreen, but I still come down with the rash on any exposed skin on my body. I just recently went to the dermatologist last week and they told me the name of this condition (very long and cannot remember the name). She said it is very common and next time I am going on vacation to give her a call and she can prescribe a medication that will help contol this reaction to the sun. I would take your DD to her doctor and possibly a dermatologist. Good luck!
