to rent a car or not...that is the question

hmmm, I was just thinking about my upcoming Mommy & Me trip in Feb. We will be flying from ATL and up until today I was thinking of just doing the shuttle transportation to WDW. Now I am starting to re think that idea. This will be my first ever stay onsite all the other times I have been we've been offsite and had use of a vehicle. I am just wondering if it would be a good idea to rent a car since we will be going during President's week and not rely on Disney transportation to get to parks and PS. What do you think?

Re: to rent a car or not...that is the question

OK, I think I am probabally going against what everyone else will reply...but here goes... My DD (5) and I just returned from the BEST Mommy and Me trip EVER!!!!! Did we rent a car???? You Betcha!!!! We stayed at POR, we did use the boat to DTD, and to the FQ a couple of times. We did use the monorail after a trip to the Poly to use the SeaRaycers, and did use the bus one time. Other than that we used the car to go EVERYWHERE on site. It was nice because since it was just the 2 of us, if we wanted to hop to another park, it was super easy-just hop in the car!!!! Also, we closed the parks each night we were there (just about) and it was really nice not to have to wait for Disney transportation.

We always rent a car too. We've only depended on Disney Transportation for 1 visit. Although it is great (disney) we love having our own transportation, and with the rental code discounts alot of times you can get the car for the same (or a little more) as the shuttles or towncar service.

Good Luck!!! And have a great time!!! This is a trip you and your child will remember forever, I know we will!!!

Re: to rent a car or not...that is the question

Thanks for the quick response, I think we will probably end up renting because I may want to venture off site to the outlets!! I am hoping this will be a trip of a lifetime for my DD (7) What things did you do with your DD to make the trip extra special? I am thinking of buying the pal mickey and have it in the room when we arrive and as always we will dine with Cinderella and Chef Mickey...what else would you suggest?

Re: to rent a car or not...that is the question

I think what made this trip so special, was it was all about her. I basically let her pick what she wanted to do, and did it. This was the first trip that she hit the 48" requirement for some of the "bigger" rides shes been dying to do!!! She rode RnR 4 times, one time in the front!!!

I think (for her) it was just the Mommy time, with Mommy being totally relaxed and going with the flow!!!! (ice cream for breakfast???? SURE!!!!)

We also spent a lot of time at our resorts pool. She loves to swim, and we started and ended each day at one of the pools.

The Pal Mickey is a great idea. For some reason, we've never purchased one though!!! Keeping up the family traditions too..like you said dining at Chef Mickeys and with Cinderella, is great too!!!

Re: to rent a car or not...that is the question

I agree with Lauren. Rent the car especially if you plan on going to the outlets and do ome shopping. Pal Mickey can be purchased over the phone by calling your resort and paying for him with a CC. They will put it in your room for you. It's a great idea. Definately let DD guide the trip and pick out everyting she wants to do like Lauren did. It's great fun to let the kids be the guide for awhile just to see what they do. My DD always gets to pick what attractions we do, but we split picking places to eat. Every trip is a Mommy and me for us and we have learned to do a lot of compromising in order to do most of the things the other wants to do. There is still one attraction she refusing to visit and even though I'd love to go on it, I don't make a big deal out of her not wanting to go on. I'm rambling...sorry.

Definately rent the car. You can use it a lot like Lauren did (ice cream for breakfast!!)
or not use it much but the cost for the rental is probably very close if not the same as the cost of the ride just to and from the airport!!! Have a Disney time!!
