What were they thinking?

I can't believe the Walt Disney Company basically got rid of all its animation.
Not only did they get rid of the drawn animation studios, but they also declared their contract with Pixar null and void after Cars.
If anyone agrees, type your viewpoints below.

Re: What were they thinking?

It's tough. I don't like the split with Pixar, and I admit it's sad that there will be no more hand-drawn animated features. I don't think it's necessary to go completely computer-generated! (It's so much less personal in a way.)

But I guess Disney feels that they need to get with the times (or even a little ahead), so......I'll just keep my fingers crossed that their CG features are just as magical as the hand-drawn features from the past.

*nods in agreement*

I wish they'd do a little hand-drawn animation - that's really my favorite. And honestly, there aren't many live-action Disney movies that I like.
And I really do hope they get back with Pixar one day. Pixar is pretty much at the top of the game right now.

Re: What were they thinking?

I agree, all of my favorite movies, Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Lion King, are all hand-drawn.

Why they would completely get rid of all animation is beyond me. Maybe it's because all of the more recent ones were so poorly done. I have no desire to see Treasure Planet, Home on the Range, or any other really new ones.

I was extremely dissaponted with Atlantis and Lilo and Stitch, and would say, with a few exceptions the last ten years have been rather poor.

Re: What were they thinking?

It doesn't look like they will be getting back with Pixar anytime soon. They are opening their own Studio and will be operation sometime in 2006 with Toy Story 3 opening sometime in 2008 or so. As far as hand drawn or computer generated, the pluses for computer generated far outweigh hand-drawn ones. I know that Disney has not let it be a secret that they are after Pixar employees too for their studio.

Re: What were they thinking?

Disneyfav, they're not getting rid of ALL animation. They are merely switching to entirely computer-generated animation. No more hand-drawn movies, but they will still produce animated features.

I know it's frustrating, but I think you're being a little hard on Disney. They know their more recent animated movies haven't been as successful as some in the past, so they're trying to improve their game. Just MHO.

Re: What were they thinking?

The hope among many castmembers is that after Eisner leaves, Pixar will reconsider.

We all hope so.

In the meantime, Disney has been creating a new animation studio, and actively recruiting/stealing Pixar employees.

Shhhhhh

As the carousel turns.......

Re: What were they thinking?

I too miss hand-drawn animation. CG is great for some movies, but it's just different.

Re: What were they thinking?

I don't know that the CG animation is better or worse than hand drawn, at least for the layperson to notice. The thing with the CG animation is that it is cheaper and faster to finish the movie. So I think when we compare CG to hand drawn, in terms of quality, what folks are really saying is that the stories (which is 99% of the movies) are better, which I think is a reflection of Disney being more critical of the ideas to start with, knowing that 15 years ago, they would be sinking a lot of time and money into the idea. With CG, they are more prolific (more movies), and more susceptible to a "miss", hence the quality appears to be less.

They're still doing sequels, that I think are going to be hand-drawn. But they're pretty pointless to watch to start out with.

They still have cartoon series also and some Pooh movies still going to big screens... although I guess that's a sequel too.

I think quitting the year after year Animated Feature is fine as long as they just come out with ones when the story is great. I hope CG will not be the only style someday... that would be foolish.

Eisner has accomplished his dream:

He has turned Walt Disney Productions into "Hanna-Barbera"...
