Re: Disney and Apple
All I can say is wow! What a great idea from both parties. I usually don't watch any of the shows they will be offering, but what a neat idea. Too bad I just bought an ipod nano, or I would buy one of the new ipod videos. Thanks for the link!

Re: Disney and Apple
I go everywhere with my iPod. I love it. BUT, to me the huge thing to take away from this is that Iger and Jobs are in business together, which means that Disney and Pixar may have mended fences!!! Jobs and Eisner "didn't get along," to put it mildly. This could mean great movies in the future between Disney and Pixar.

Re: Disney and Apple
I have seen several articles about that same idea, since Jobs is back working with Disney through Apple, maybe the Pixar fences can be mended. Here is a good one:

Re: Disney and Apple
I am resisting as strongly as I can, adopting a portable MP3 player for this simple reason, MP3s do not sound as good as a CD. I'll say that again, MP3s don't sound as good as a CD, and they never will. Think of your song like a piece of Wonder Bread. You can squash that slice down to a pretty tight bread ball, but you'll never be able to uncompress that ball back to it's original form, and that's the difference between a CD and an MP3. So here we are in the time of the Jetsons, and you spend hundreds of dollars for something that actually doesn't sound as good, in many cases, as your 30 year old vinyl. Why? Simply because the format allows a huge amount of songs to be carried in your hand? Yesterday I got a new cell phone and could have gotten one that picks up 30 cable stations, but the service adds $30 a month to your bill. Same with internet on my phone, it adds more than I'm willing to spend to the monthly bill. Video IPod, ok, just not for me. Not until prices drop, image and sound quality are at broadcast levels, and a truly compelling excuse to buy.
As for Disney and Pixar, I'm hopeful, now that Eisner has stepped aside. I only hope that the Weinsteins can be brought back into the fold. After last year's Fahrenheit 9/11 fiasco (for Disney the loss of distribution revenue for a $300 million grossing film), there's a big fence that needs to be mended before Miramax is totally lost to the company!

Re: Disney and Apple
I'm a big fan of both companies, so I actually watched the webcast of the iPod announcement with great interest. Jobs was very witty in his introduction to the video content by saying, "I *know* these guys." (meaning Disney).
Iger, on the other hand, clearly stated that Disney has a good relationship with Apple-- Not Pixar. In fact, he stated in his speech "We'll talk about that some other time...". It was interesting to watch the new Disney CEO talk and take such an aggressive action in an otherwise happy moment. And SoundGod, thats OK by me about the quality. I have owned an iPod for neary 4 years now for the main reason that i wanted to take my music with me on the long commute to work, and was tired of my CD's falling out of my hands on bumpy rides, and spilling all over the place. YOu can control the sound quality of an MP3 to suit the average listener - and you know what, I just noticed last night -listening to music on my iPod through speakers beats the pants out of listening to my scratchy LP's in the days of my youth (I'm from the older generation). I'll take an Mp3 any day over going back to vinyl. The same can be said about video. I can't wait to get a video iPod (it's time to upgrade, and my birthday is just around the corner).. But I am not expecting to watch hours of stuff on it. The point would be to watch quick snippets, podcasts, and other goodies as they become available. Catch up with news on the train. Watch a show I missed. Or even show people the latest home video I created. But the quality will never be as good as popping in a DVD. Doesn't mean I don't want it! In any event, Disney is interested in venturing forth with leading the way in technology, and this is a great step forward.

Re: Disney and Apple
SoundGod, I remember my audio engineer brother telling me the same thing about CD's when they started replacing LP's. For most people MP3 is good enough.
On the Disney/Pixar front I have heard rumors that Jobs is open to selling it out right to Disney (or any other party that comes up with the cash).

Re: Disney and Apple
>>Iger, on the other hand, clearly stated that Disney has a good relationship with Apple-- Not Pixar.<<
To quote Fozzie Bear as he spoke to Scooter in Muppet Vision 3D, "Those penguins ARE the orchestra." Anyway, isn't Job=Apple and Jobs=Pixar. Granted Apple does not = Pixar, but if you have the CEO on your side, it has to help. >>listening to music on my iPod through speakers beats the pants out of listening to my scratchy LP's in the days of my youth (I'm from the older generation).<< Did we have 8-Tracks?? I loved those!!! >>I have heard rumors that Jobs is open to selling it out right to Disney (or any other party that comes up with the cash).<< I wouldn't put it past him, but Jobs has a knack for getting what he wants, and I'm sure Katzenburg is out there somewhere (although I heard he wants out of DreamWorks) or someone who would hang Pixar over Disney's head. I can only imagine Igar/Jobs/Katzenberg on the same team. It could be formidable. Frank |
