Re: Disney trades Al Michaels for cartoon rabbit

This is actually a pretty cool story. NBC wanted Al Michaels for their football broadcasts, so ABC/ESPN/Disney negotiated. Among other things, ABC/ESPN/Disney got the rights to the cartoon character "Oswald the Lucky Rabbit."

What's the significance? According to the article:

"Oswald" is a 1927 cartoon series of 26 episodes created by Walt Disney and distributed by Universal, which owned all rights to the character, Disney said in a statement. The loss of Oswald prompted the Disney empire founder to create Mickey Mouse, the company said.

So after all these years, Oswald "belongs" to Walt again.

I heard this last night and then got more details this morning. I think it is great that Oswald is back in the Disney fold!! Walt would be pleased.

Re: Disney trades Al Michaels for cartoon rabbit

I work at NBC, & when this was announced, nobody less than 50 had even heard of oswald the rabbit. As the chief of NBC sports said, Oswald was bringing in no revenue, which is what NBC's parent company, GE, is all about!
So, from our standpoint, it's a good deal.
Also, ESPN also got some other exclusive rights for expanded highlights from things like the olympics & notre dame home games, plus a promo for the Monday night game during every Sunday night game on NBC through 2011!!!

Thank you for clearing that up! Even after reading the article, I was still lost.

(OK, so maybe I just skimmed it... like Tessa, the big words kinda threw me off... I was lost after the first paragraph... )

Re: Disney trades Al Michaels for cartoon rabbit

Even though the situation is if Disney had never lost Oswald, then Mickey wouldn't exist, I say welcome home nonetheless.

Re: Disney trades Al Michaels for cartoon rabbit

I'm upset that Michaels and Madden left ABC, but at least Disney got something for it. I wonder what Disney will do with Oswald, if they do anything.
