Roy O. Disney Resigns, asks Eisner to step down

Wow, quite shocked to get this in my in-box:

Roy resigns, asks for Eisner's resignation

It just broke on WSJ online a little while ago. I'm kind of awestruck.

I'm a little shocked by this one MM. Roy must have been offered something good to bail out. How can he leave his legacy like that? I'm sorry I find this a little dirturbing. Maybye it's my Disney loyalty talking, but I can't imagine walking away from something that was so dear to someone in my family. I'll take his job if he doesn't want it......ohh just think of the things we could do with that position guys....woo hooo....I would live a a different resort every month and switch accordingly.....wow! He must be a major #$%#$ to walk away. It's not like he needs the money for God's sake...

I saw this on the new last night. Roy didn't looked to "forced out" to me. He was all smiles for the camera. I would have been in tears I think. Perhaps he was putting on a brave face for the press. It's really sad. No Disney family members at Disney....very sad indeed. Walt is probally very dissappointed. All that hard work and no one in his family to carry on with the company. I think maybe I'm taking this a little to personal....sorry all...I just find it very sad.

Out of lurk mode... :bandit

According to articles that I've read, they decided to enforce a mandatory retirement age of 72 to 3 of the board members (including Disney who is 74). In the past, they have not enforced this policy, and in fact this time they didn't enforce it with Stanley Gold who is 72 or older.

This smacks me as quite wrong to enforce a policy sometimes...depending on who you are. I would be a bit surprised to hear the 3 departing board members are anti-Eisner and the remaining member is not.

Sigh.

With 40% of the stock Roy can still be considered a part of the business.

Also I find it interesting that the recent upswing in Disney stock was directly related to the recent animation and motion picture success. (which is Roy's department) and not TV and Theme Parks (which is Eisner's department).

Well, at least we know why they ignored their bylaws on age for two years. Just look at the past two years in film and what has been in production (to be released). Kinda strange to mess with the moneymaker if you ask me.

He was not offered anything outside of Disney. I believe you are misunderstanding the point of his leaving. He is taking a stand for all that he believes in and publically making it apparent. This is very bold and brave on his part. We surely do not need to call him names under any means. We need to support a movement like this and hope Eisner has the respect and dignity to honor Roy's request. Hopefully someone will come in worth having the job and get Roy back into Disney.

Think about it, if Disney no longer wants to be associated with Disney, then something is seriously wrong. PLEASE... read the letter he wrote... he has no say, no control, and he is being watched in his own namesake company. That's just wrong on so many levels.

Boy was a shocked by this one but on the other hand...

I'm totally behind Roy on this one. Eisner needs to go. Eisner did some really great stuff early on reviving the company and the parks (went over board and built two many new parks). But in the latter years he (Eisner) has also started moving the company away from it's family friendly core. Eisner has been coasting, living off the built up magic of the brand.

My big question is with all the talent that Disney has why do we as Disney fans need to rely on Pixar for a well told story?

Go Roy! Lets hope your bold move can re-ignite the magic.

Isnt the answer clear its the green stuff in our pockets(or not in in my case)

But it all comes down to profit. Make the largest sum of money in the quickest possible way. Quality and talent aside.

Spider, I don't think Dana's comment was cruel, just from the heart without knowing the history of the company. I totally agree with everything you said, too.

Roy resigned once before - in WDWSpider's words, in a 'bold gutzy move' in the early 1970's that shook the very foundations of the board at that time and resulted in Eisner's hiring and one of the most glorious turnarounds in Disney's history. I do see this as another such move - he's trying to shake up the 'status quo' and the company back on track to the 'Disney Vision.' Eisner's oft been accused of micromanaging too much lately.

A true leader loves his troops more than being a leader itself and is willing to move aside for the betterment of the whole. I see that in Disney's words. Now, let's see what kind of leadership material Eisner's cut from.
