Icon5 Ricky Schroder as Peter Pan (almost made movie)

A few years back, I remember reading in a couple of different books that a live-action version of Peter Pan was planned in the early 1980's with Ricky Schroder playing Peter. However, the project fell through and never was made. Don't remember if Disney was making this or not, since I don't remember any mention of a movie company. One of these books was a film reference book that listed Peter Pan along with Apt Pupil (which also fell through, right in the middle of shooting) in the list of Rick's movies. Don't remember too much about the other book, except a few things; one was that Schroder's outfit was going to be more like that of the Disney cartoon (with the green tights), instead of the more accurate to text leaf outfit worn by Jeremy Sumpter in the recent live action film. I also remember that a crying scene for Peter Pan was written in, since Ricky Schroder was so good at it (if you've ever seen The Champ, you'll see why!), more specifically in the scene where Tinker Bell was apparently dying.

The 2nd book also mentioned a kissing scene (which may have been planned as Schroder's first onscreen kiss) with Wendy, played by some British girl about his age (don't remember a name offhand).

Anyone else remember reading any mention of this, or am I the only one?

Hmmm...

I haven't heard of this before at all. In fact, I was surprised to discover the recent remake was NOT a Disney film... And, however much I enjoyed the live action, the Disney Animated really IS the best I've seen.. Especially where John, Michael, and the Lost Boys were being recruited as Pirates...

Re: Ricky Schroder as Peter Pan (almost made movie)

It seems to me that in the early 80's, he would have been a very young Peter Pan. He is a year younger than me, born in 1970. In 1980 he was only 10 years old.

(I know this, embarassingly enough, because I was a HUGE fan during his Silver Spoon days)

Re: Ricky Schroder as Peter Pan (almost made movie)

Disney didn't create Peter Pan, they just use the characters in their version.

Hook, Finding Neverland, and Peter Pan were all made by different companies. The recent Peter Pan was made by Universal if I remember right, very good btw. I loved that Hook got a chance to fly.

Anyone remember the old cartoon series Peter Pan and the Pirates. They got to explore a lot of lesser known areas of Neverland in that series.

BTW Great Ormond Street Childrens Hospital owns the copyright for the Peter Pan name and have done since 1929. It makes the hospital a fair few ££.

See http://www.gosh.org/about_us/peterpan/history.html for more info (if you ever wanted to know).

This only would have been good if Alphonso could have played one of the Lost Boys.

Hook was Amblin (Spielberg's Co), Finding Neverland was Miramax, and I think you're right that the new PP was Universal. I've NEVER seen a PP version that I truly liked...always HATED the Mary Martin version....having PP played by a girl always annoys me - PP did not have breasts!

But I remember that old cartoon, it was great!

He is very handsome. He also plays the father in Peter Pan, and he is in the Patriot too. His name is Jason Isaacs.

Actually, I don't remember seeing a release date/year from either book. In the first book, a list of movies was listed, including movies actually made and fell-through, but years were not listed. Peter Pan was listed under theatrical motion pictures, and the list of the movies was as follows:

The Champ, The Last Flight of Noah's Ark, The Earthling, Peter Pan, Apt Pupil, Across the Tracks, There Goes My Baby

Peter Pan was listed between The Earthling (released in February 1981) and Apt Pupil, which had a June 1988 release date planned (according to another book or magazine, think it was Entertainment Weekly, but fell through right in the middle of shooting!). So 1980 seems a bit too early an estimate, when The Last Flight of Noah's Ark (which was a Disney film, BTW!) was released. Actually, a more accurate estimate for Peter Pan would be circa 1982-84, during his early Silver Spoons days; which places Schroder around roughly the same age as Jeremy Sumpter when he played Pan in the 2003 film.

Hope this helps!

There is in fact a stage tradition that Hook and Mr. Darling are played by the same actor, and I believe that was also the case in Disney's Peter Pan (1953) as well.

Re: Ricky Schroder as Peter Pan (almost made movie)

You are right, Kent, it was the same in the Disney version. It is because Mr. Darling is the threat to never growing up, both with Wendy in England and with Peter in Neverland.(English major rears her ugly head!)

You know what, I never was aware of the fact of Mr. Darling as a threat to never growing up for the tradition of the same actor playing Mr. Darling and Captain Hook. Glad you pointed that out!
