Spirited Away
Has anyone seen Spirited Away?
We have not and my kids were wondering if it is a good movie. Rotten Tomatoes site has given it 100% fresh (the best rating a movie can get). This movie will be released to DVD and vhs on April 15th. My kids are very excited to see this movie since they love Japanese and oriental culture. My son is currently a Blue Belt in Tae Kwon Do.:bandit Thanks!! |

I have seen it three times. I took Minnie, the first day it came out. I then took my kids a couple of times. I absolutely loved it, and have ordered my DVD already. It truly is a mesmerizing show. Minnie didn't like it too much, it is a bit different, and somewhat bizarre. It was a bit scary in parts, but I let my 7 year old see it, and he was fine. I was very excited to see it won best picture, it is the best film I have seen in years. (Chicago is a close second, by the way)
I have heard that Disney will be releasing it in theaters this weekend, and if you have a chance, take your kids to see it there, it will be much better than watching it at home.

It was only in three theaters locally when it was initially released, and only stayed at them for about a month. It was full each time I saw it though. I would guess that you will be able to catch it in Cincinnati.
BURBANK, Calif., March 25 /PRNewswire/ -- "Spirited Away," the 2003 Academy Award® winning animated feature from acclaimed Japanese filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, is set to open in theaters across the country on Friday March 28th, it was announced today (3/25) by Dick Cook, chairman of The Walt Disney Studios. The film, which claimed top honors in its category at the Sunday night Oscar® ceremonies, was one of the most critically acclaimed films of 2002 and was selected by many leading journalists as one of their "top ten" films of last year. "Spirited Away" has previously received the Annie Award (from ASIFA-Hollywood), the Golden Bear Award (from the Berlin Film Festival), and was honored as the year's best animated film by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, the Broadcast Film Critics Association, and National Board of Review. Commenting on the announcement, Cook said, "We're thrilled that the Academy has chosen to honor 'Spirited Away' for its incredible achievement in storytelling and artistry and we're proud to be associated with legendary filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki in bringing his masterpiece to moviegoers across the country. The film is far and away the most successful film to ever play in Japan and it has always been our desire to share this film with the widest possible audience here in the U.S. With this important Oscar® recognition, the film will have the additional awareness and appeal needed to find a welcome reception. All of us at Disney are extremely proud to have had three of this year's nominees in the Best Animated Feature category and to have played a part in bringing the award-winning 'Spirited Away' to moviegoers. "Spirited Away" follows the fanciful adventures of a ten-year-old girl named Chihiro, who discovers a secret world when she and her family get lost and venture through a hillside tunnel. When her parents undergo a mysterious transformation, Chihiro must fend for herself as she encounters strange spirits, assorted creatures and a grumpy sorceress who seeks to prevent her from returning to the human world. Hayao Miyazaki is one of the most highly regarded directors/animators/comic artists in Japan. His movies are beloved by all generations of Japanese people, and have enjoyed huge successes both commercially and critically. He started his career as an animator at Toei Animation Studios in 1963 and was involved with such popular TV series as "Heidi" and "Future Boy Conan." In 1979, he directed his first film, "Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro." He went on to direct the 1984 feature, "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind," a highly sophisticated film that was as popular with adult audiences as it was with children. The success of "Nausicaa" led Tokuma Publishing to establish Studio Ghibli, a new animation studio for Miyazaki and his longtime colleague, Isao Takahata. Among the films that Miyazaki has written and directed for Ghibli are "Laputa: Castle in the Sky" (1986), "My Neighbor Totoro" (1988), "Kiki's Delivery Service" (1989), "Porco Rosso" (1992) and "Princess Mononoke" (1997). In less than four months, "Princess Mononoke" broke the all-time box office record in Japan (previously established by "E.T." in 1982). In addition to the films that he has personally directed, Miyazaki produced such other Ghibli films as "Only Yesterday" (1991), "Pom Poko" (1994) and "Whispers of the Heart" (1995).

Spirited Away is a gorgeous film with lots of interesting characters and subtle meanings. I watched the Japanese version as well as the English dubbed version, and I have to say that the English version was very well done. There are a lot of sayings and creatures and visual images that are already known in the Japanese culture, but had to be explained in the English version. I loved them both equally. Also, if you haven't already seen it, My Neighbor Totoro is another wonderful film!

Sorry MickeyMac,
I hadn't had a chance to really get back onto the site for more than a few moments at a time to reply... The differences that I spoke about are very subtle and probably won't be noticed at all because the translation is so well done. One of the things is the "golden seal" that was stolen from Yubaba's sister. In Japan, your seal is very important - it is how all important and confidential documents are signed (not a signature). The importance of the seal being stolen by Haku would not have meant much if it were translated as just that. The word golden was used to make it seem more like a treasure and therefore precious. Also, the bath house setting for the adventure was used because in the Japanese culture hot springs and bath houses are often retreats for the business weary. It is a place to relax and revive the soul for a few days before having to return to the usual grind of one's job. The gods and spirits also, are coming to this bath house to relax and enjoy their days off before going back to business. It is a place where friends meet, have fun and then when they return to their everyday lives, look forward to the next visit to the bath house. Kinda like me and WDW :) I hope this little bit of info helped. The film is so gorgeous, I could watch it over and over! Oh and if you remember the little sootballs from the film - they made their first appearance in "My Neighbor Totoro" as the dust bunnies. :laugh |

I caught the bathhouse setting, and thought it was incredibly prophetic in a way. I saw the spirits as "souls" and that the bathhouse took every soul, no matter how foul, to cleanse and rejuvenate was a great point with the kids. Also, that we all need our private time (really worked THAT one in. :D) Also, that Chihiro really took great faith in the spirit as having a good heart, no matter what otehr people thought... I could go on, too. I really want to collect his other movies. We have watched them over and over and over. I just like this movie.
