Little Match Girl

I didn't know where else to put this post...but did anyone see this short on The Little Mermaid DVD yet?

SO SAD. I mean, don't get me wrong, it was beautiful, and it was just how Andersen wrote it. But golly, I didn't know Disney had it in them to animate such sadness. Lord knows they butchered the true ending to Little Mermaid well enough.

Sorry! Just had to gush. It made me cry! And I'm not even uber-emotional right now!

Re: Little Match Girl

I haven't bought my copy of the little mermaid yet, so no I haven't seen it. Thanks for the warning..I really don't like sad movies at all...especially animated ones...why in the name of heaven do they need to make sad animated movies? Why would they want kids to be sad?

Ooohhhhhhhhhh, I remember that story from Elementary School. I picked up the book and read it one day, and cried all the way home from school.

How was the REAL ending to the Little Mermaid??? I must be lost. I tought that was a WDW original!

Re: Little Match Girl

Well its...bittersweet. It's based off another story Han Andersen wrote, under the same name, and all his stories end a little sadly.

I guess I was just mostly shocked that Disney had the balls to animate something without butchering the ending to suit a truly HAPPY ending. Like the Little Mermaid for example. I still like they're version though, don't get me wrong.

Crazy Disney, pulling a fast one on me like that.

In the real ending according to Andersen, the Prince finds another Princess, not sure how, and mistakes her for the one who saved him from the Shipwreck. So they marry, and the mermaid's sisters surface to tell her they cut off their hair to the seawitch to get a knife for the mermaid to kill the Prince with. If his blood splashes on her feet, she'd get her fin and voice back, etc etc...but she couldn't do it. So she threw herself into the ocean, turned into seafoam, and went to a nice little mermaid heaven...place.

Like I said, bittersweet!

Re: Little Match Girl

Wow, I never knew The OTHER LM story!

The Little Match Girl - how can they Disney that up? This IS the story where she lights the matches until she dies, right?

She sees the happy families, it's CHristmas Eve...etc? Right?

OMg. I hated that story, and it BROKE my little 9 year old heart!

Re: Little Match Girl

Well, I hate to pounce on Disney, cause in general I love what they do, but they have butchered just about every Fairy Tale.
For instance, in the Beauty and the Beast, there is no such character as Gaston, and I really had a hard time putting up with that particular character because his behavior towards Belle was unacceptable. I don't want to describe it any further, you have all seen the movie. I was very upset with that movie.
If I thought about it, I could come up with other examples.

Re: Little Match Girl

I have to say, I know that most of these stories are based of literature, as is the little matchstick girl...but I had never read/heard of this story, and when I saw it, I flipped out. I mean, thank goodness my little girl isn't old enough to understand it, because it's not something I would have wanted to discuss with her. I really wish that short was not on the DVD.

The one that got me was Hercules. It was a good movie, but it was nothing like the myth.

I actually kind of liked the Little Match Girl. It was sad, but they told the story beautifully.

So, did I have the right story? I haven't seen the DVD. I just remember reading the book...was the short the same as the story?

Does anyone remember the movie "The Little Match Girl". It had Sara Jessica Parker in it when she was a little girl?

You're all probably not old enough.

I'm sorry. I don't remember, even though I'm not entirely sure I'm too young to remember, I just don't!

I haven't watched this yet, but now I'm curious to pull out our copy of The Little Mermaid and check it out for myself!

So wait...are they making a movie of Little Match Girl, or is it just a short on the DVD?

It's just a short on the DVD. They seem to be always adding a short onto the new DVD's now.
