Song of the South on video

I'm not sure if this has been discussed on this site. I did a search and found nothing.

I have seen on e-bay some DVD copies of the movie "Song of the South". I did some research on-line and have found some sites that say Disney has never released "Song of the South" on DVD, yet the listing on e-bay show pictures of boxes with the "Disney DVD" logo with the swirl. I realize people can do some fancy stuff with digital pictures.

Are these copies, in particular the DVD copies, legal? If I were to buy a DVD copy, would I be in voilation of copyright laws? The people selling them do not claim authenticity or state they a bootleg copies.

I want to be sure I'm not doing anything illegal before I bid on or buy this item. Can anyone help me!!

It was released overseas, and is probably a legal copy if it says that it is (eBay will drop them like a heartbeat if there's any issue). The only concern would be that it's in a format your DVD or VCR can recognize. That you'd have to check yourself.

Let us know what you find out. I have been wanting a copy of this movie for years. My dad works in Europe and the middle east most of the year and has tried in the past to get me a copy that I can play but has not been able to do so yet. If it is a DVD we can use I'll have him get me a copy before he comes home in few months. I would love to have a legal copy of this movie. I have a version that my dad bought in Europe a few years ago but I can't play it, it's not VHS or a DVD.

If you go to Disney.com and look for the Disney Vault, you can put a search in there and it will come up with the movie and info. They state that it's not released but if you want to put a request in for it, they accept that. I did that and had my whole family do the same. Maybe with enough requests, they will release it here someday.

Thanks sandanv1, that site answered the DVD question. According to this site Song of the South has never been released in DVD format in any country. This must be a bootleg copy on ebay.

I wonder what the law is? If you buy this DVD and it is a boot-leg,
who gets the penalty. The buyer, the seller or both?

I think the way it reads on songofthesouth.net is no dvd for region 1 have ever been released. There may be dvd's from other regions available. Not real sure.

I have a PAL format VHS that my friend in England sent me. But I also have a VCD copy. This movie is special to us because it has connection to one of our favorite WDW memories. When Barbie was finally tall enough to ride Splash Mountian she kept calling Brer Rabbit her honey ( she was six) She was so happy she was tall enough and she and her sister kept giving each other high fives every time they went on it! She sits and watches Song of the South over and over. We have a bluebird nest box out back with babies and my DH keeps teasing her that she has to train them to sit on his shoulder while he sings zipadedooda

In NY both (buyer or seller) can be held criminally liable for bootleg merchandise.

Thanks mattomouseman,

That's what I thought. I steered clear of the auction after doing some research. I want to see this movie, but not bad enough to do something illegal.:madmad

I plan to order a copy from england that is PAL format and have it converted to NTSC. It's just so expensive!!!

It would be nice if we knew the story so we could better understand the spalsh mountain theme.:D

I have to say your right for those who have never seen Song of the South I think they miss out on the theme behind the ride. IMHO the story is about an old Man that loves and helps a young boy deal with problems. It is really as heart warming as Polly Anna and it teachs that you cant run away from trouble.
