Project Firefly

Came across an interesting article regarding some of Disney's ex-animators.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Five animators who lost their jobs at Walt Disney World opened a studio of their own.

The animators have worked on projects such as "The Lion King," "Pocahontas," "Mulan," "Lilo and Stitch" and "Brother Bear," WESH NewsChannel 2 reported.

Every cloud has a silver lining, however.

After mortgaging their homes, the animators opened up their own studio called Project Firefly.

Dominic Carola said this is a fantastic moment in time for them. He said Central Florida should be a gold mine of entertainment and they are ready to do some mining.

Although their studio is located on the Universal Studios back lot, the animators have still kept Disney in their hearts, and on their walls.

There are photos of Walt Disney all over the studio. But for now, the only mouse they are working with is attached to their computers.

Looks like something to keep an eye on. This is from WESH.com. Here is a link to the article which includes a video. I have not checked the video out yet.

Sad to see these great Disney animators now working on a Universal lot. /shudder

Re: Project Firefly

On the Universal backlot??? Why would they do that??? Isn't there any office space for rent in Orlando???

There is another group of ex-animators who started their own company. I can't think of the name of the group, but I know ParkHopper posted a thread about them.

Re: Project Firefly

Good for them. I wish them the of luck and hope they continue to follow in Walt's foot steps.

As for Universal thing...didn't Walt work at another studio when he was starting out?

Re: Project Firefly

Looks like Walt produced short for Universal back in the 1927 and 1928 - Oswald the Lucky Rabbit film. Febuary of 1928 Universal tried to get Walt to join the studio which Walt declined. Walt gives up Oswald to Universal and creates Mickey on the way back from New York...the rest is history.
