Sequels to Classic Disney (My Rant for the day)
I haven't seen any of the animated sequels to the Disney Classics, so I don't mean to offend anyone who might enjoy them -- but speaking as a longtime Disney afficionado - do we really NEED a sequel to Cinderella? Or Dumbo? Was Return to Neverland really necessary? Hunchback 2??? Didn't Quasi DIE in the novel?
Why doesn't the team behind the magic try casting some spells of their own? Obviously, they've proved with Lilo and Stitch that there is some new ground yet to be covered. But then again, is it to be loud, brazen, meddlesome, mischevious, cunning, and obnoxious? Do we REALLY need to follow what happened AFTER Lady and the Tramp? Or the Little Mermaid, even? And why is it always the same old story retold from the child's point of view. I almost walked away from Disney altogether when I saw DINOSAUR- here was an amazing looking movie, wrapped around the plot of the Lion King/Bambi/Tarzan and insert any other misfit in a world Disney movie. Walt's vision was grander. These folks should think grander. My rant for the day.:hmmm

I totally agree with you. Oddly enough, I was having this same discussion with someone earlier as well & I'll say now what I said then...Disney needs to re-spark some creativity. Disney is now releasing a "new" film just about every 4-6 weeks either in theaters or on DVD/VHS. Either wy, it seems that they are more concerned with putting out quick flicks than anything else. Maybe they forgot..."quality not quantity".
Don't get me wrong, I did like the sequels...all of them, but they are rehashed, unnecessary, tired films. Thank Heavens for Lilo & Stitch, or there wouldn't be anything new coming out for Disney fans!

cheaper to make, name that is familiar so less advertising needed to push it....sequels will keep on coming until they stop selling. working in a vhs/DVD store i see that they sell.
btw this is happening w all the studios not just Disney. Land Before Time series has been releasing a new movie every year. theatrical movies have many sequels.... new ideas are harder to come by |

I'm not sure that 'new' ideas are that much harder to come by - especially since Disney often 'borrows' source material anyway, but they are sure riskier.
I've mentioned this in other threads too...there is too much focus on the stock price/profits which ends up translating into a focus on the short term. Of course, this trend isn't just Disney; IMO, it's 99% of large corporations. My prediction for the next wave of direct to video movies? Crossovers. Cinderella takes a safari to Africa and ends up teaming with Simba to foil Cruella's plan. Hey, you could probably work Tarzan in there too! Ugh. Bruce

from the mind of a blonde ... I dont know that the sequels are so bad .. look at jason (friday the 13th) he has died a million times I think and still comes back .. I have seen most the sequels and they were ok .. I did really really enjoy Return to Neverland. I think my granddaughters liked Cindy 2 more then I did ..it was ok but they really liked it and loved the music in it. Actually there must be a demand for them or no one would make sequels.

I agree. They are very unnecessary. Most seem very poorly thought out as well. Although I really enjoyed Aladdin and the King of Theives. Probebly because Robin Williams was back as Genie. But I think it was good. But the rest. Nah!

Just heard yesterday that Disney already has a sequel planned for L&S to come out on video next year. Obviously they're making money on the sequels or they wouldn't be planning them for every movie, old or new!

A sequell for L&S, now that kind of disappoints me. Just when Disney come out with a good story with a tidy ending, they are going to squeeze the creative blood out of L&S. It seems that Disney relies on automatic sequels too often. I think that the creative talent at Disney is as strong as ever but there seem to be fewer flagship projects in a given year. Instead, they have been producing some less than stellar movies while releasing sequels to proven successes. I hope that they financial stability will allow them to take greater risks on some of their grandest projects (no...not the Country Bears). BTW, I picked up my bootleg copy today of L&S. I'll still buy the DVD when its released though. :devil :laugh

Re: Sequels to Classic Disney (My Rant for the day)
Now...I don't mean to offend anybody, and I can't believe I am saying this, but I am sort of torn over the issue of the Disney-straight-to-video sequals. I have always been a fan of the classics, and I certainly don't like the idea of "making a quick buck". BUT, I am a grown adult who grew up without these sequals. I have different tastes than say an 11 year-old whose world stops when mom pulls out the Lion King 2 video. I don't think it's our place to say whether they should be putting out as much, seeing as though children seem to be enjoying them. But then again, Disney Co. has built itself on quality...and there doesn't seem to be as much quality in those videos. So...I am torn. That is one of those Disney controversial subjects :)

Re: Sequels to Classic Disney (My Rant for the day)
Wow. This was a resurrected post. I must've been in a mood when I posted that one a couple of years back!
Reading over it, I still stand by what I said. I am glad that the "attraction" movies came across better than expected, but I am still not looking forward to sequels to Bambi or Dumbo. But unlike when I first started this thread, it doesn't really matter to me what they do. I only purchase the programs I want from their archives (like their MM Club one, and the DL one), and don't even bother with the sequels. I'm glad that some folks can get some enjoyment out of them, though. I think what I was ranting about was the rehashing of themes and scenes, moreso than another adventure. I mean, if they made a really good movie about Pinocchio, in which he is STILL a real boy, and has an amazing adventure, I'd probably enjoy it. But if they find it necessary to make him wooden again, just to turn him back, that's a rehash. Same for Beauty and the Beast. What happened Ever after? Not the same old thing again and again. As for the other gals, I hope I never have to hear, "This 'princess thing' isn't what I thought it would be", uttered in a coming attraction trailer again. Those of you old enough to remember might get a giggle at the thought that everytime I hear the title:" CINDERELLA TWO", I can't help but think it's going to be subtitled, "ELECTRIC BOOGALOO" ![]()

Re: Sequels to Classic Disney (My Rant for the day)
ROFL! OMG, geeman...
![]() I have to agree with everything you have said thus far. I grew up with the classics, and have not watched a sequel so far that I actually liked. (Granted, I haven't seen Return to Neverland and that is the only one members of my family say was decent, but...) I feel like I'm getting ripped off when Disney comes out with those sequels. I feel like they're pouring money into things that don't mean anything, while they could be pouring more money and effort into a GREAT new theatrical release. It feels kinda cheap and secondhand, like most of the movies that Hollywood is producing nowadays--no new ideas, just remakes of old movies or "makeovers" of plots & characters that already exist. Blah, blah, blah...here I am, just "rehashing" exactly what everyone else has said. LOL.

I agree too. I've heard some say "sure the sequels suck, but how are they really hurting anybody, if you dont like them just dont watch them." Well I wrote this petition against the sequels where I think I made a lot of good points against them, and how it is more than just if you dont like it dont buy it. For one it is disrespectful to the creators of the original movie, if you go and read the peition I also make a lot of other points against these peitions. If you havent seen it yet it's at this URL, http://www.petitiononline.com/ghd8769/petition.html
