Re: Just a Reminder to Be Careful!

I spoke to someone at Chase again last night and he assured me that it would not show up on my credit report. He said the account will show up as "closed for suspected fraud." I also think that the person who stole my account # was shopping on the internet. So, hopefully they have a shipping address that they can track. Also, it makes me feel a little better to know that the person will probably not receive the merchandise. Something about them walking out of a store with $10,000 worth of stuff under my name just upsets me!!!

My husband uses American Express and swears by it!! He loves that company!

I think that is so awesome. That night we were buying a lot of electronics and clothes for our kids. Not that we don't buy them things, just not thousands at a time. They probably figured some kids got a hold of our card and went nuts. I was very impressed with Amex. Is Amex still the card of WDW?

Re: Just a Reminder to Be Careful!

We have a debt/visa that I use for almost everything and last month I went to use it for a very small purchase and it was declined for being stolen/lost. I didn't have cash on me as I never do and had to use a credit card.
I called the bank and they said my number was in with the ones stollen in Atlanta and so they cancelled it. I wan't mad at all at them but greatful they acted so quickly. Now I am thinking about using my visa credit card for everything and then just paying at the end of the month. I don't know what I would do if my debit card/checking account was cleaned out. I am sure it would take a while to get things right again and in the mean time I would probably miss my money! At least with a credit card it isn't money that you are depending on. It is scarry. Makes you think!

P.S. Put See ID on your cards not your sig.
I never understood signing the back of your card. Doesn't that just give the bad guy your sig to copy? I have had a clerk have me sign my name on mine (because it hadn't been signed) and then had me sign the credit card slip and then she actually stood there and compared the sigs to make sure they match! I JUST SIGNED BOTH OF THEM IN FRONT OF HER! UGGHHH!

That is crazy to have you sign both in front of her and then compare the signatures. It is smart to write See ID on the back of your card. I would rather have to show my license than have my card signed where someone could copy my signature.

Exactly. I was starting to think I was the only one that felt this way.

Re: Just a Reminder to Be Careful!

Even putting "See ID" in the signature field doesn't guarantee anything.... The vast majority of fraud happens over the phone or over the Internet where a thief doesn't have the potential of getting captured on camera or asked to show proper ID. And the "See ID" only works if your actual card is taken - it does nothing for you when your account number is hacked. I'm not trying to be overly pessimistic - just stating facts. Trust me, from one who works in the credit card industry, we banks will bend over backwards to keep you as a cardholder - if there is a problem with your account we'll do everything humanly possible to fix it. It costs us a lot of money to acquire an account - we won't lose it until we do everything in our power to save it!

Banks have a zero liability promise and you are not responsible for fraudelent purchases. And trust me, an account closed for fraud is not a detriment to your credit score and will not keep you from being approved for a card.

Re: Just a Reminder to Be Careful!

Understand that anything on your VISA card that is not yours, you are NOT responsible for. That's a VISA thing. I don't like showing my DL because then they can have all sorts of information, including my address. Whatever you put on the back of your credit card can be wiped off or scratched off & still used. And anyway, when you go to the gas station, grocery store, internet they don't even take your card...you just swipe it so there's no way they can check anything on the back of the card. Like I posted earlier, just keep an eye on your account. At the first sign of anything "fishy" contact your issuer.

Re: Just a Reminder to Be Careful!

Very true! My Visa/debit number was stollen...not the card.
We still can't sit back and worry to much. Just keep an eye on things.

I have been very happy with the way Chase has handled the situation so far. Everything that they said they were going to do, they have done. I am very pleased with them and their customer service agents.

Do you think they will make an attempt to catch the person, or do they just let that go. If it was an internet purchase which required a shipping address, do they check that out? I would love to see this person caught!!

Re: Just a Reminder to Be Careful!

I think as this horrid person made such a HUGE amount of purchases then Chase should look into finding them and prosecute. I imagine that if your card was used for minimal $ then they probably would ignore it but such an enormous spend ( and over the internet too?! ) then they really cannot ignore that one.
Just shows you how dumb criminals really are though....shopping using a stolen card over the internet, getting items delivered.....DUH!

I hope it all gets resolved soon x

Seriously, I don't know how these stores are training their employees these days. I have 'Check ID' written on every credit card I have. They usually don't even check the back signature area. I naturally will pull out my ID with any credit card or debit use, and hand them both to the cashier. They'll just smile, 'oh, we don't need that. We trust you.'

Landry - so sorry this happened to you. But glad they handled it properly!

That's because stores these days understand that if identity theft is going to happen, they'll have fixed up a driver's license, too. The stores are covered in case of fraud & you're covered & the chances of them catching fraud by checking id are sooooo remote it's not even worth it. It's a different world these days....

But they still can't connect my signature with my face.

I'd rather them waste their time and check my ID.

But that's what I'm saying...it takes nothing for someone to get a drivers license with their picture & signature & your name. We see that kind of stuff all the time....
