I just want to remind everyone to be careful when using your credit cards these days. I found out tonight that my Disney Visa account number was stolen and $10,000 worth of merchandise was charged to my account!! Thank goodness I am not being held accountable for any of it, although I wish I could keep the reward points!!

I tried to charge dinner at a restaurant tonight and my card was declined. As soon as I got into my car, I called customer service to find out why, since I knew something had to be wrong. The customer service agent said that I had over $10,000 charged in the last few days which exceeded my limit. Well, needless to say, panic sets in!! After reviewing the charges (all in Sacramento Tower Records and some Golf shop) we confirmed that the charges were not mine. She immediately closed my account and will reissue me a new one.

I asked how if I have the card in my possesion, someone else could be using my account. She said anytime you use your card to buy gas, hand it over at a restaurant, or use it on the internet, your account number can be stolen.

So, I just want everyone to remember to be as cautious as possible when using your cards. And check your accounts often for fraudulent activity!!

Wow, Landry, that's amazing. I'm glad you're not liable for the charges. I thought it was bad when Cingular called and someone had charged $140 to my DW's cell phone in Mexico, but $10,000! We all need to be careful.

I know!! How much music can you buy for $10,000 at Tower Records????

I just wish I knew HOW they gained the access to the account. It really makes me nervous!

that is really scary landry! If it was me, I would call all my other credit cards just to check them and make sure also!

I would also suggest you get a copy of your credit report. It will help to see if any other activity has been going on.

We had a few strange charges on one of our accounts, and talked to the bank. The banker told us a lot of times, these people will make small charges to see if they can get away with, to see if you are checking your statements. Then they go to town if they find out they can get away with it.

You just can not be too careful these days. Glad you found out right away!

As soon as we got home my husband checked out our checking account to be sure my debit card hadn't been stolen also. Those are the only two cards that I have.

Also, Chase is supposed to notify the three major credit agencies for me. Hopefully they will send me a copy of my credit report.

I am hoping it's all as easy as the customer service agent made it seem.

I too just had a card stolen recently. I was fortunate to catch it after only a few hundered dollars of fraudlent charges.
Now I am really nervous and checking all my accounts almost daily.

My bank calls me almost every 2 months just to check that recent charges are mine. It seems to happen every time DD and I go shopping for the afternoon (which is usually several $20-$25 charges within a couple of hours). It can be suhc an annoyance sometimes, because the bank will leave messages for me at work and home several times before I even return from shopping, but I'm glad they make the effort.

I am so nervous now!! I was going to call when I get my new account to see if they can put some kind of safety measure in place for charges. For example, can I say, "OK, if $1,000 is charged in one day, I want to be notified." What really surprises me is that in March I went to Mississippi and shopped a little. When I returned I tried to use my card at a local store and it was declined. When I called to find out why, they said they thought my card may have been stolen because of the out of town charges so they had frozen it. But $10,000 in CA doesn't seem suspicious enough to freeze???? I never charge amounts that high in a couple of months, much less in two days!!

We had something simialr happen several years ago. A clerk at a store got my account number for my Master Card off of the store's copy of my receipt. I had no idea until I got my credit card bill and noticed several hundred dollars worth of purchases at a rent to own store. I called the credit card company to let them know that I did not rent anything from a rent to own store, they told me that since my statement there had been 10 more transactions. They closed that account and got me a new card, but I am still fighting to get the disputed charges and acount off of my credit report. It still shows up as unresolved. Needless to say I quit using that company completely, but I don't like having that show up on my credit report. When we bought our house, we just had to show the mortgage company all of our documentation and letters that we had showing that this was not our doing and they did not hold it against us. I wish you the best of luck getting your situation taken care of.

Oh no! I hope it will be as easily taken care of as the customer service agent said. I point blank asked her just to be clear, and she assured me that I would not be responsible for the charges. She also said that they will notify the credit agencies. I am keeping my fingers crossed. Can it be that simple???????? I hope so.

By the way, how did you find out who had stolen your account number? I have no clue!!!
