I may be way off, but I thought I read that the small carts that sale popcorn, ice cream and the likes will not except the room key. Or was it a cc. Well that's no help at all is it.

They take room keys because they let you use the dining plan snacks to get those things with so they let you use your room key to charge since it's the same machine. We have yet to find a place that doesn't take the room key to charge with. Disney wants us to spend our money so they make it as easy as possible.

just thinking that way i wouldn't have to worry with keeping up with my rewards card while in the parks.

This makes perfect sense to me. I've done the same thing with VISA gift cards that I've been given and it all worked out just fine.
