Is anyone else old enough to remember...

...the big speakerphone booths in Tomorrowland?

They used to be where the Mission to Mars display is now - or was - they are putting the Buzz Lightyear ride in that area.

Dh and I were just reminiscing about them. Just a big open carpeted room, with nothing in them but speakerphone rooms/booths that could sit 6-7 people. This was pre-cellphone days and when we were teenagers, we would all pile in there and call our friends that weren't with us, with everyone screaming "Guess where we are?!!" And we'd of course gossip and talk about who was there that day, etc etc etc... We also knew the phone number to every booth and of course, we'd receive calls in there too.

Ah, those were the days... those booths were so cool! I was so bummed when they took them out.

Anyone else remember these?

Re: Is anyone else old enough to remember...

I loved those!!! We always called someone (usually my parents) back home in North Carolina! It was SUCH a novelty back then!! I guess it wouldn't seem so cool now. Does that make us old?

I think they had something like that in the Communicore displays at Epcot, but I could be mistaken. Anybody else remember this?

ahem.... I do not remember that which means that you must be ancient. Did you answer that "how old are you" thread earlier today. Let me look there...

Re: Is anyone else old enough to remember...

YES! My family crowded in there (my mom and dad and brothers and I) and we called my grandma in Idaho. We thought it was so amazing that she could hear and talk to us all at once. We made a big point of saying, "You're talking to ALL of us at once!" Har, it seems ridiculous now.

And back then, a long distance call was a big deal, because it was expensive... so we must have really thought it was the wave of the future if we didn't have to pass the phone from person to person.

Wow, something Tomorrowland predicted that actually came true! Hee hee.

Tee hee! Dopey, you're going to get yourself in trouble on this site!! You better watch yourself....I think you're even older than me!! ( I'm 43 - my kids tell me I am soooo old!! )That means you probably remember some things at Disneyland that I was too little to remember (Monsanto House of the Future, The Mule Pack ride, Flying Saucers, the Viewliner?) Any of these ring a bell?

How long ago were those in TL? I was probably not even born or to young to remember them. What were they?

I checked on yesterland and couldn't find anything about them. But I'm going to guess that they were taken out about 1990 or so. Maybe a little bit earlier.

All it was was a big, huge, open room, with telephones and the speakerphone booths, which you could fit a LOT of people into. Remember that at the time, speakerphones were new technology, so this was very exciting. The booths were glass with benches on each side, and were soundproof. Against the wall was the touchpad and a wall speaker. When we were your age we'd all pile in there and call all our friends.

Disneywife - I actually never saw any of those! Growing up on the East Coast, I didn't get to Disneyland until my late teens (although I did get to enjoy the group phone booths on several occasions) I'm just a big Disney history buff and love to read about the way Disneyland used to be. Hey, I'm ony 43, I know I'm ancient to my fourteen year old, but I'm not over the hill yet!!

Thanks for the info on them . I went over to the on site Management offices and asked one of my aunt Alices friends and she said they were taken out in either like 1988-1989, or so she remembered. But thanks for the info on them. :-)
