Walt Disney's private apartment

Did everyone see the special on Good Morning America today, where Robin Roberts toured Walt's private apartment? He had it built above the Disneyland Fire Department in the middle of Town Square... They have kept it exactly as it was when he lived there during the construction of the park. The story is that he would have raisin toast each morning for breakfast, and then take a walking tour to check on the progress of the construction. Also, they keep a light burning in the window to represent Walt watching over the park!
How great is that???

Re: Walt Disney's private apartment

I saw that, too. I thoought that was soo cool. I always like to think of Walt watching over the parks and his "world" where imagination reigns. Now, it seems like everyone at Disney likes to believe that as well. Gives me faith in them.

My wife called to tell me about this. I wish I could have seen it. She said they leave the light on, but at Christmas they put up a lighted tree. Neat!!!

Re: Walt Disney's private apartment

I saw parts of the broadcast this morning. Very neat. Is the apartment closed off to everyone? Or can you see it on a tour? They also talked about Space Mountain and Stunt Show. I liked that they went to both parks to show the new attractions.

Re: Walt Disney's private apartment

I have always wanted to try and get in there. At one point the Disney Magazine mentioned that it was part of the Walk in Walts Footsteps Tour, But when I booked the tour, they said they never do that and it was "misprint"
They keep the apartment in "SHOW FORM" as they call it, even changing the linens.

In the 1955 issue of National Geographic, they did a spread on it, pictures and all. I guess the cloeset we will ever get to Walts appartment, is to visit the Disney Gallery, which Walt was creating at the time of his death. THis was to be his families apartment, (over the POC) he picked the moulding and everything. If you look carefully, you can see how it was laid out, plus it connects to Club 33

Re: Walt Disney's private apartment

It's one of my favorite spots in the park.

Walt apparently chose that location because he can see the front gate from the patio. (you can see the patio from Main Street as well) Apparently he'd go out on the patio at opening time, and stand there with his hands behind his back watching the crowds pour in, with a huge smile on his face, saying nothing.

Gotta love it...

And no, you can't see it on tour. Even my dh hasn't seen it - very few actually ever do. It's 100x more exclusive than Club 33. Everyone on the street below, however, can see the light in the window.

Re: Walt Disney's private apartment

We took the Walt's Footsteps tour on Sunday. What they do is take you in the downstairs of the firehouse and point out where the beds are and where the 'kitchen' area is. You can get a good idea of the size by the ceiling footprint but you don't go upstairs. The guide said the apartment only was comfortable for 4 people; Walt, Roy and wives. There is also a brass fireman's pole in there installed for Walt. Lillian told him be had better not use it and he said he wouldn't... There was a larger apartment in the Orleans area that they used later. You can identify it by the grillwork outside. It has WD and RD entwined in the ironwork.

Actually, Walt died before the apartment was fully completed, so he never had the opportunity to live there. It's now the Disney Gallery. It's adjacent to Club 33, where Walt felt it would be easiest to live and entertain at the same time.
