I hope this satellite photo answers your question. Disneyland is the dark green circle. California Adventure is to the south, in what used to be the Disneyland parking lot. To the left side of DL is the hotel area and the parking. Everything else around it is non-disney. When built, it was in the middle of now where, but people caught on quickly and bought up land around the park. That is why Walt bought so much land in Florida, so this wouldn't happen again.

Interesting, isn't it. I wouldn't say that it is in the middle of a city. The buildings directly around it are hotels, and most of them are more of the motel style, not taller than three or four stories. There are a couple to the south that are about ten stories tall. The Hilton, which is attached to the convention center is the biggest by far. The Disneyland hotels are all pretty tall, in the ten to fifteen story category. If you notice on the photo, the majority of the surrounding area are houses. Our view from the Disneyland hotel during our last trip was from the tenth floor, overlooking the pool, but to the side of the hotel, was a residential neighborhood. The houses couldn't have been more than fifty feet from the pool. Fortunately, Disney has done a good job of masking everything. You don't even realize where you are until you leave the property.
I also don't know if I would say that the two parks are the same (ie. Disneyland and Magic Kingdom). There are some similarities, and the layaout is similar, but Disneyland has about fifteen additional rides, and is cramed into a much smaller area. There are virtually no wait areas, they have all been built outdoors by arranging ropes. The exception would be the newest rides such as Indiana Jones. |

Disneyland California is definitely a three day trip, and that is about it. I can easily spend ten days at WDW and not feel like we did everything we wanted to. |

Yes, if you look at the photo, Disneyland is the green circle, right below it is California Adventure. There is a small plaza between the two gates, where the ticket offices are and where the parking shuttles drop you off. If you look closely, you can see a lake, and that is the end of California Adventure. That is the California Pier section, where the California Screamer is located. (One of the best Disney rollercoasters ever!)

Hopefully this photo will clear it up. The red area is the plaza between the two parks. The green to the top is entrance to Disneyland. The area to the bottom of the red is the entrance to California Adventure. The green roofed buildings in the bottom left corner is Grand California Hotel.
