The end of Fort Wilderness

It's being reported that starting in the next few days crews will begin to demolish the fort on what was once called Tom Sawyer's Island. Now sitting on what is called "Pirates Lair" the fort was no longer in safe enough condition to be allowed to stand apparently. I find it unfortunate that its time has come.

Here's hoping that what ever replaces the old fort is worthy of the "Disneyland legacy."

Re: The end of Fort Wilderness

It's very sad to hear of tradional things leaving the disney parks. I know they will make it something, but it would be nice to hold on to some of the older things too....

Awwww........ memories....... I loved playing there as a kid. Haven't been in it in a long time but it makes me sad that I won't be able to see it.

I know that the island needs to change, but for the love of all things Disney, please, please, please tell me they are keeing the canoes and the cute boys that work them. Some of my favorite teenage memories revolve around riding on teh canoes with my girlfriends to flirt with the boys, lol.

LOL...For now anyway I think the canoes will stay, but who knows about the future since they really don't fit a pirate theme do they? Enjoy them while they last.

LOL, can you imagine a pregnant woman in her 30's with her kids and DH flirting with the canoe guys??? THere will be no canoes for me this July.

I think Disney&BYUdad's DD and SIL worked the canoes--he might have some insight.

Re: The end of Fort Wilderness

When I was at Disneyland the past few days, there was significant work being done on the island. I think the funniest part was watching the CMs who operate the rafts move the construction guys across the water because it's the only way they could get over there. It was really humorous to me.

I did take a photo of the signage advertising the Pirates Lair while in DTD. So for your viewing pleasure...

Well wow... I just about died when I saw the title. I also thought it was in reference to Fort Wilderness Campground. Whew! Glad it's not. And now I see this is in the Disneyland section, lol. Just out of curiosity are they doing any updating to Toms island in WDW? or is this only at DL?

I thought the same.

Never been to DL but I know I would be upset if the fort at WDW was being removed.

Re: The end of Fort Wilderness

Is this just DL or are they doing this in DW as well?

Never went there as a kid with my parents or when I was on my honeymoon (my parents belief that it wasn't worth doing stayed with me). Decided to explore with my family in '02 and while not the greatest attraction it was a nice diversion.

I know Disney likes to update and synergize everything but some things like the Carousel of Progress should stay. I've always thought that if they wanted to change or lose an attraction they should look at Autopia. Tie it in with Cars or better yet, Herbie goes to Monte Carlo. They could turn the track into a miniature European road race with little Eiffel Towers and other landmarks.

From what I have been able to figure out the fort HAD to come down due to its unsafe state. There were plans to replace it anyway due to the coming of pirates lair but not until phase 2. I hear the story is that in order to allow park guests to use the new restrooms that were built their for pirates lair the fort had to come down since the walls were so decayed they were being held up with 2x4s.

As to those who got the scare about the camp grounds...sorry but I did put it in the DisneyLAND section, what else can i do?
