Re: Astro Orbitor closing

I don't believe they would close it for good! No way! That article has got to be wrong. I got a chance to talk to some of the guys who were doing a walk-through of the People Mover track when I worked at Astro; they were gathering data and preparing ideas for the Tomorrowland revamp. They said the People Mover was a go (shooting for 2011), and Astro would be moved back "up top" to open up the Tomorrowland entrance.

Thank heavens that stupid Observatron and all its obnoxious music would have to go away if they moved Astro back up there... That has to be one of the most annoying, unnecessary things in any Disney park...IMHO.

Yup - I appreciate you posting this article! I would be devastated if they ever closed Astro! I also have a special attachment to Astro where it's at now because my family was in Disneyland the week before TL re-opened after the refurb in 1998. We were the first group of people to get to try out the "new" Astro before the grand re-opening - we were given special passes and everything. Who knew that less than 10 years later, I would be working there!

haha, if you check back in page 1 you will see I posted info from a CM about the 2011 re-make and the move of the astro orbitor up-top to where it used to be.

I have to say, I hate seeing rides go. They're apart of many memories and magic.

Re: Astro Orbitor closing

Does this mean they'll be closing all Tomorrowland attractions at one point? What about the monorail? (I personally think DL's monorail is rather pointless....)

DL's monorail is what it was originally intended to be though - an attraction. And if you think about it, it provides about as much transportation as could be expected in such a small resort area.

Actually, the original Disneyland Hotel was located immediately adjacent to the Monorail Platform. Now that the building has been torn down, it's not as logically located..

But it was extremely convenient for those who were staying at the hotel, who didn't have to cross the street and walk halfway over the parking lot to get to the entrance.

Yeah... I think it should extend it to go to the resorts and California Adventure, though.

Oh, and 6-2-6, I was wondering if I was crazy! Before our DL trip in 2005, I had recently done a school project on Disney, and for the monorail portion, I found this old information sheet, and I could've sworn it said it went to the Disneyland Hotel. So on the morning of our breakfast at Goofy's Kitchen, I suggested we take the monorail from Tomorrowland to the resort.... only to find that it lead to DtD, not the resort.

Yeah, I was disappointed they didn't extend the ride to the far end of the hotels or even open another stop platform at the Grand Californian. What amazed me is the fact they filled in so much filldirt so that you can jump and touch the monorail supports now at the DTD platform. Before they removed the street, the Monorail was twenty feet in the air...

I actually ran across an old Disneyland map, that still showed Disneyland having the full parking lot and the old Disneyland Hotel. No Grand Californian, no California Adventure..

Since they added Indiana Jones, Disneyland has been encroaching upon the parking lot and ever since. The last of the original parking lot is going to be used for carland...

Re: Astro Orbitor closing

Okay...so the news of the Astro Orbitor being taken out by this summer due to cost to maintain it is true, it will be removed this year and eventually be replaced with an all newly designed rocket attraction. The person who said the news online was not true obviously didnt know what they were talking about. So yes, the Astro Orbitor is in fact being taken out this year.

Sad day.

Disney wanted MUCH higher numbers of people through those turnstiles every day than was humanly possible in order to make the attraction "cost-effective". (Thus why the staffing was also cut back from 6 CMs to 2 in previous years. Yes, there used to be SIX CMs at Astro at a time! ) Well I hope they are able to redesign it in a way that will bring in higher volumes of people.
