First time at Old Key West!! Any advice?

We are official DVC members and so excited. I can't believe we haven't done it sooner. Our home resort will be at Saratoga Springs Resort and we are thrilled. We couldn't get our entire Feb 2005 stay at SSR so we opted for OKW which had the entire time available in a studio. We have never stayed at OKW and we are looking for any information that would help. We usually stay at CBR and we know what to ask for in regards to rooms and buildings. But we are a bit lost, to be honest, as far as OKW goes. Any help would be great. As far as those of you who are considering DVC- Go For It!! They are offering a free amount of points if you buy now and we got 10 days at OKW in Feb as well as 4 days at Disney's HH in April. Can't wait.

Re: First time at Old Key West!! Any advice?

congrats on the DVC purchase! OKW is our home resort and we will be going in May and split our stay between OKW and SSR. This will be our first time at SSR and we cannot wait.

Keep in mind that OKW for the most part does not have elevators (only 2 or 3 of the newer buildings do, but those are reserved for accessible people first). I don't mind the steps, and I love to have a view, so I would recommed room (studio) number 1831. It is on the 3rd floor and has a wonderful view of the pond with a fountain. At night you will hear the bullfrogs croaking away....it's hard to believe you are in the hustle and bustle of WDW. It is so relaxing! It is also really close to the bus stop and a quiet pool.

We enjoy the size of the rooms at OKW and the relaxed feel. Keep in mind you can't just walk down to a food court. Also keep in mind that if you have a car, you can drive right next door to Port Orleans French Quarter and eat at their food court and swim at their really fun pool.

Re: First time at Old Key West!! Any advice?

OKW is our DVC property of choice, and we've stayed at most of them. One thing to remember is that OKW has a different "feel" than most Disney resorts. It's more of a little village. It's definitely not as exciting as some other resorts, but after a day in the parks, we love the quiet, relaxed feeling. If you are staying in a studio, try to stay away from Old Turtle Pond Road. The studios there back close to the highway and the noise from the buses can be distracting and annoying. The studios in the lower numbered buildings will be much closer to Hospitality House and much quieter. Hope you enjoy your stay. (Olivia's is very good for "comfort food").

Re: First time at Old Key West!! Any advice?

We have stayed at SSR, BCV (Twice) and OKW.

We love Old Key West. The rooms are huge. In July 2003, we had a great 2-bedroom overlooking the canal. We thought it was great. Would definately stay there again!

Have fun.

llama,

You mentioned staying at the lower number buildings is much better. Are these buildings closer to the hospitality house (what is this) and the main pool? Can you give me an idea of the numbers of these buildings? Would like to request a view/area but not quite sure where??

Thanks,
MJD

Yes, for a studio, I would suggest Buildings: 16 through 19. These are a short walk from Hospitality House. They're close to a bus stop and a pool, and most importantly, they are very, very quiet. Buildings 11 through 14 are just across the street from Hospitality House, but could possibly be noisy because they are so near the entrance and main bus stop. DO NOT let them try to give you Buildings 37 through 41. These back on to the highway and are a good hike to the main pool & Hospitality H. Buildings 45 and 46 are almost perfect, facing on the water, very quiet & close to pool & bus stop, but are further from HH. Hope this helps!
