Sap or Saint

Just gotta ask a question of my fellow DVCers:

We are staying at BWV in April along with a family that does not belong to the DVC. We feel bad having them pay $1800 for 6 nights when I could use approximately 100 points to book them a studio. We could just charge them the typical $10 a point for a total of $1000. Problem is, we would have to borrow from next years 300 points.

We made the inital offer already. So in a nutshell - Are we saps or saints? There is a fine line between the two... would all of you nice people do this?

Re: Sap or Saint

I think it really depends on your relationship with this family. If you are close and aren't too stressed about borrowing 100 points then do it! It wouldn't be like you were giving them away for free if they paid you $10/pt.
The other thing is, will you regret having used those points up next year? If so, maybe see if you can help them find someone on-line that sells their points.

Re: Sap or Saint

Skwak ~ humm, I don't know. You're a saint for offering, but like chiasgirl said, are you going to regret it next year? Yes, they would be saving $800, but is there any other option for them? I really don't know much about DVC and how it works, but can you use the money they pay you for your points this year to purchase someone elses points for next year?

Are they totally opposed to staying offsite, or is it important that you all stay at BWV?

I am a born sap Skwak ~ so I would just do as you offered and forget my own advice, but really think it over before you do.

Re: Sap or Saint

I agree that you are a saint for offering. If you are an annual passholder, you might look at booking the room for them and applying the passholder rate.

Just a thought!!

I think you are a saint to offer your points. Bank the 1,000 dollars and use that to go to WDW next year. Use what's left of your points and then use the 1,000 toward the remainder of your stay. Your a good friend. I would have done the saem exact thing to help someone out.

I agree with Dana! If you save that 1000 it should almost even out right?

Saint...going with what Dana said.

Just make sure you get them to a DVC pitch and they give your name as the referral.

Re: Sap or Saint

Thanks everyone for the kind words. We did actually decide to help out and will bank the $1000 towards a cruise in 2006.

I will definitely pitch the DVC for them. They would be a great fit. In some ways they would be an even better fit than us.

CaribBeachNut, I am not sure that I understand your posting completely.
Do you mean that you wouldn't vacation with another family? (This doesn't worry me)
Or do you mean that you would not use your points to help the other family make a reservation? (This I too had to think about)

I think you are a great friend, you put a great offer out there. Some of our best friends are DVC members and have given us points in the past. This summer we are meeting up with them for the second week of our WDW trip. They have booked a 2 bedroom at BCV, I can't wait.

I would not go with another family at all. It sounds mean, but many best friends have parted ways over money matters. When we go on vacation, we want to be able to do the things we want to do (our immediate family) when we want to do them and how we want to do them. That is how we relax. By necessity, there are a lot of compromises when you go with another family and sooner or later someone will be disappointed. We all work too hard all year long to possibly miss something at WDW that we really wanted to see-all in the name of compromise. It is too easy to hurt someones feelings, disappoint someone, etc. Vacation should be a time when everyone feels free of responsibility, carefree, nothing but fun on everyone's mind, and everyone recharges their batteries. Especially true being immersed in Disney magic!
