DVC questions

Ok you DVC veterans, I have a couple of questions for y'all.

1. Is there any maximum amount of points?
2. Do DVC points ever appreciate or depreciate? If I bought my points today, and went to sell them in 20 years, should I expect to get at least what I paid for them?
3. How long do your points last? Are they deeded?

That is all I can think of for now...thanks in advance for your replies! :)

Re: DVC questions

1. I don't think so.
2. There are many resale sites which offer the points at a discount, so I guess those people are selling them for less than they bought them for but also remember they have used several years usage of the original points.
3. They are good until 2042 in the original DVC resorts, now that Saratoga Springs is open I think that if you buy there they are good for 50 years but not sure about that. I know you can give them to your kids or grand kids in the future but you really don't own anything after the time period is up.

Re: DVC questions

I have read about people meeting a guy who basically lives at WDW. He has enough point that he spends 10-11 months a year moving around between all the WDW DVC resorts and Hilton Head. There was talk then that 5,000 points was the max but Disney would allow people to buy more. I heard that that limit was set to make sure an outside company didn't acquire too many points.

Saratoga Springs points expire in 2052.

1. Not that I know of. At least not any practical limit.
2. I think they have generally stayed flat because even though there is a resale market, WDW keeps raising the prices of new points so the resale market only goes so low. Also, Disney has the right of 1st refusal which means that if someone would take such a low ball offer, Disney can step in to prevent it and buy the points back.
3. 2054 for SSR, 2042 for all others. You can will them to your kids.

Re: DVC questions

Thanks all! This is good information! I am really looking into buying a SIGNIFICANT amount of points, but I was nervous that when I go to resell them (if I so choose to do) that I wouldn't be able to recoup my investment.

Thanks!

Re: DVC questions

Mr. Incredible, regarding your first question about the maximum number of points allowed . . .

The maximum allowed by DVC is 2000 points at any resort and 5000 total. Some families have reportedly bypassed these limits by deeding some contracts in the husband's name and others in the wife's name.

I simply can't imagine owning so many points; it was a stretch for me to "buy in" with the minimum. And the dues!! Mamma mia!

Re: DVC questions

One thing not to forget is that you don't have to use your points just at WDW...they can be used at many other resorts around the USA and the around the globe! DVC makes it very easy to use your points at a disney resort or anywhere else on their list.

Yes, that is the reason I am planning to buy around 1000 points. We want to travel the world, and I noticed on the DVD you can book African Safaris, which is one thing I REALLY want to do!

Well, we paid about $14,500 for our 270 points about 6 years ago. We purchased them from a reseller. Right now, 270 points at OKW are going for about $19,000 - $21,000. So, it is possible that they may appreciate, but unlikely. My guess is that these prices will stop to drop as people realize that the expiration date is approaching quickly. I would think if you bought the points from Disney, and 5 years from now, baring any unforseen depression, you should be able to get a good chunk of your money back if you do choose to sell.

I agree with Mickey, as you get closer and closer to 2042, the points will be less attractive in terms of making a large initial investment.
