Need help deciding on buying DVC points
Hello!
i need help and i knew this is a great place to start My parents now have officially paid off their DVC so they bought is i think 5 or 7 yrs ago. So my DH and i are thinking (well i am) about buying into it as well. If anyone would like to answer how much do you pay a month and for how long (years?) does it cost for the 150 points or 200 points? i just cannot seem to get that answer out of the information line without going to a sales rep and them pulling my credit i am a mortgage underwriter so i know what happens when people pull your credit without permission I am just curious if someone would be willing to share how much they pay so i can give an idea to my DH to sell him. I need to get all the info i can and the info they sent did specically tell me thanks

Re: Need help deciding on buying DVC points
I'm sure there have been other posts before, but maybe this one will help answer my questions too. I've never been able to understand why people would spend thousands for one trip a year on DVC, when as an AP, I can go several times a year for just a couple hundred per visit. I mean no disrepect to the DVC people, I just don't understand how the process works and I don't want to ask a sales rep and have to go through all of the high pressure sales talk.
What part am I missing about the DVC?

I would also like to know about the length of time you are a member. I have seen several things about the expiration dates. How does that work?
Thanks!! Also, does anyone know any reputable resellers (websites pref.)? I have seen where Mickey talked about going through a reseller and it was usually cheaper.

Re: Need help deciding on buying DVC points
This is what I know, the DVC of older resorts expires in 2042, SSr goes to 2050, I think. SSr was selling 150 pts for about 14k. No matter what you buy you have to pay a maintenance fee based on your number of pts. If you are seriously considering this I would look into buying a resale rather from WDW itself. It can save you alot of $$$$

Re: Need help deciding on buying DVC points
When we bought in 1993, we arranged our own financing because the Disney rate was pretty high. When we added on a few years later, we just put it on a credit card that had a really good rate, so I really can't answer as to the exact amount of monthly payment you would make.
As far as spending thousands for one trip a year....often we go more than once a year. With the points we have now, we could stay up to 6 weeks a year in a studio if we go in value season. Since we bought into Old Key West (originally known as the Vacation Club) our lease on the property will expire in 2040 (I think). We have already been using our vacation home for 11 years and have many more years to come. This lease can be passed on to our children, should anything happen to us. Of course, there is the maintenance fee that we have automatically drafted from our bank account. It is less than $100/mo for the points we have...so for less than $1200/yr, this year, we will have a 2 bedroom home and a studio for 8 days in December and will have my sister and her family and my daughter and some of her friends enjoying the magic with us. We still have points left over. The newest resort has a lease that goes into 2054, I think. This just means that with the number of points you buy, you have that many points to use each year for the entire length of your lease. You can bank any points you don't use into the next year or if you need more, you can borrow from next year. There is some really good information posted under the DVC forum here on DC, so you might want to read over some of the threads there if you haven't already.

Re: Need help deciding on buying DVC points
I just said this in another thread. I sent an email requesting payment/financing questions and the answer was " please call us and we'll tell you" . I didn't want to call, because I am a push over and would have bought without thinking about it.
Next thing I know a letter with a DVD explainging the money details came via Fed Ex about a month after my first email to them. This package explained everything to the 't' and now all my questions have been answered. Knowing that you have the ability to go to other places as well as anything Disney is nice. That made the whole thing more pallatable for my husband who doesn't quite share my enthusiasm for Disney. Go figure.

Re: Need help deciding on buying DVC points
We bought into DVC in October 2003, at that time the price per point was a little cheaper...like $10 a point cheaper. We bought the minimum of 150 points, made a downpayment of 10% I believe and financed the rest for 10 years. So our monthly payment is $140 and our monthly dues are $35. We are at Saratoga Springs so we'll be vacationing for 50 years... We can take the interest paid on the note off of our taxes...not sure if you can do that in all states. It's a WIN-WIN-WIN situation. 10 years of vacations with payments w/ a tax deduction each year and then 40 years of vacations and fun after that!! Monthly dues continue through the entire 50 years, but hey, I can handle that!! My DSis tried to get us to buy in a few years ago, wish we would have then!

We bought into SSR last week and I can tell you that the going rate is $98 per point but Disney has a deal going on now that reduces the rate to $90 a point. In May of last year the rates were $89 per point for SSR. We did self financing and used part of a Home Equity line of credit so the interest is tax deductable. Seeing how much we spent on our vacation made this all the more easy, and we used my AP discount. With 2 children a hotel room is just not big enough and staying inside the park - you get almost all the benefits of being a Disney Hotel guest - is way better than staying outside the park (we stayed off site in a house the first of our two weeks). We have enough points (250) to stay the entire month of January in a one bedroom with a pull out queen-size bed in the living room at SSR. AH, a little privacy, and our own TV at night.

Re: Need help deciding on buying DVC points
We have owned since 2003 (SSR) and just added 120 more points this year for a total of 420. Goofyguy1958 did a good job explaining the upfront costs. The annual maintanance fees are approximately $4 apoint so for 150 points it would be around $600 a year. DVC will gladly take a monthly payment each month from you checking account without any interest or penalty. That works out to about $50 a month which is really not much at all.
We are happy members and have not regreted it yet. PM if you have any more Q's or want to speak. ![]()

Re: Need help deciding on buying DVC points
I don't under stand how it can cost anyone "thousands per year. We bought in December of 2000. Financed through DVC for 10 years. We have 150 points at OKW and pay $110/month and about $40/month for maint and taxes. After 2010, we will be paid off...no more $110/month. We will still have another 32 years of vacations after that, no cost for lodging...How can you beat that??
For example...if you stay at Pop Century for 7 nights per year, that is approx $800 with tax during regular season. If you go every year until the year 2042 you'll have paid $29,600. With DVC we paid about $11,000 (plus finance fees) and 150 points per year gets us about 12 nights per year at OKW. We can go 7 nights in the early summer for 98 points and then over spring break for 5 nights for 55 points. But, the GREATEST thing about DVC is that you don't have to do JUST disney. They make it so easy to use your points all over the US with the Concerige Collection. You can go to the mountains, or New York City or anywhere in between. You call them up, and they do the rest. For example, we "paid" 147 points in Keystone Colorado during the summer for 7 nights a few years ago for 6 of us in a two bedroom condo. Plus Keystone gave us certificates to do tons of free activiteis there (ie gondola rides, hay rides, panning for gold, etc).

Re: Need help deciding on buying DVC points
A question BDavis932, have you heard the rumor that Disney was going to add a wing of the Contemporary to DVC? I would be very interested in DVC if that happened. Thanks for any info.

I, too, have heard that rumor and hope that it is one that comes true! Wouldn't that be cool??? But I've never heard that rumor through Disney, so I guess for now it's just a wait and see. I think that they already announced another DVC resort slated as a "golf area" resort, so I'm guessing it will be near SSR and OKW...

Re: Need help deciding on buying DVC points
Yea, I have also heard that rumor. Think about how difficult it would to get in there if you were a member in another resort. That would be one primo spot.
Also, there is a golf course right beside SSR and they are actually building more onto SSR that would be literaly right on the course. So you can join SSR and simply walk out the door to the course. www.active.com/donate/tntepa/tntepaMBandru
