Selling your free gift for $50 on e-bay
I notice that the prints that DVC sent to its members have started to appear on e-bay with starting prices as high as $50. I buy and sell lots on e-bay but think it is really below the belt to sell things like this that were given to you as a special free gift.
What does everybody else think? Is it morally correct to sell this free gift on e-bay for $50. I have started a poll.

Re: Selling your free gift for $50 on e-bay
Once a gift has been given, it belongs to the recipient. The recipient may do with the gift whatever he or she sees fit.
Unfortunately, what a lot of people see fit to do is (at the least) tacky. Now, I can see donating something, or perhaps auctioning it for charity, but somehow I doubt that's what's generally happening...

Re: Selling your free gift for $50 on e-bay
My husband and I have had this same conversation.
As much as I personally think it's a tad silly, since we've got the conversation started, and you asked - these are my thoughts: 1. The value of an item can only be set when the BUYER pays for it. Meaning: If a person who buys it thinks it's worth 50 dollars, it really doesn't matter HOW the person who is selling it came accross it (Unless, of course, it is stolen.) Sort of a one man's junk is another man's treasure type thing. 2. IF a person receives a gift - it's that person's right to do what they want with it. Sell it. Kinda like what Voldemort said. It's their gift... It could be because I'm sleep deprived, but I can't even see the moral issue here. Perhaps it will become clearer as the thread unfolds. Please don't think me ungrateful, but I've sold gifts at yardsales. Stuff my kids got that they didn't play with. Stuff I randomly received from an overabundance of Secret Santa parties at work. (I was appreciative of my gifts, but you know how it goes...) Is it the same principal? Am I morally inept for selling something I didn't pay for, but had ownership of?

I don't think it's sleep deprivation, Erin... I just don't think morals come into it. I totally agree with your #1 & #2!

Re: Selling your free gift for $50 on e-bay
I know that when I see someone selling something like that on ebay I think "How can they sell that special thing", but I know that when I've received, say a pin from the MVMCP, and thought it was ugly or didn't fit my collection for some reason, then selling it so someone else can enjoy it seems like a good solution.

I really don't see anything wrong with selling those prints. Some people just don't collect them. I have to agree ~ there is no moral issue here.

Re: Selling your free gift for $50 on e-bay
perhaps rather than a print they would have wanted the money to put towards the dues? Or for spending money for the trip? If you dont put a price of some sort on it then its worthless because it was free to everyone who has it. Perhaps the person selling it felt that way- on a personal note... I would sell it if I did not need it since I could use the $ for a trip instead.

I could honestly care less who sells what...if it's yours then you can do what you want with it.

Re: Selling your free gift for $50 on e-bay
Personally, If I didn't want a gift card that I received, I would hang on to it for the holiday season as an "opps I forgot you gift". There's always at least one person who comes around for Christmas that I didn't expect and who buys me something.,..I like have a few extra gifts laying around.

Re: Selling your free gift for $50 on e-bay
A few years ago, when DVC opened up the Villas at Wilderness Lodge, they sent out pins to all members for that, and I remember getting some other pin from them as well. I put them on ebay right off, I remember I got around $75 for one of them and about $50 for the other. It was either that or give them to my kids, and honestly, I would rather have the money.
I don't see any problem in it at all. Now, if it was a gift from your mother, then, ebay might not be the best idea.

Re: Selling your free gift for $50 on e-bay
I don't see a problem with this at all. Maybe the picture didn't go with someone's decor. People are very picky about what they hang on their walls. They probably thought it should be in someone's home who wants it on the wall instead of sitting in a closet somewhere collecting dust.
