DVC-Which Resort to Pick?

With the news of AKL being the next DVC, that helped me finally get off the fence and look into buying. Originally we were going to make AKL our home resort, but now I'm reading other threads where it seems more financially sound to buy at one of the other DVC resorts with lower maintenance fees. I guess my question to you is what benefit do you have with the resort you make as home?

The benefit is that you can make reservations at your home resort 11 months out and at all others 7 months out. That gives you priority at your home. Some of the more popular resorts like BCV are usually booked by 7 months out.

We had a choice between Boardwalk and the BCV when we bought in. We had never seen either, but opted for BCV on a whim. One of the best choices we've made. The big advantage being able to book at that 11 month window. We hope to book for Thanksgiving 2007 before the end of the year.

Look at the locations and see what works for you. You won't want to be locked into someplace where your not happy. You could always opt to stay elsewhere, but you will inevitably bump up against that 7 month window.

You also get a longer contract with the new properties. I think SSR ownership expires in 2054, as opposed to the older resorts. I am not sure of their expiration date.

True, the others are 2042. AKL will probably be 2054.

Re: DVC-Which Resort to Pick?

You will have little choice. Only Saratoga Springs has new inventory left and obviously Animal Kingdom to come.

Disney have no points left in any of the other resorts. You can only get the other resorts if you buy from other sources.

As for the length, if you buy a new contract direct from Disney it is traditionally for 40 years. I am not aware they do a longer one. If you buy from elsewhere then you will be buying a 'second-hand' contract, the remaining length obviously depends on how long the original owner was signed up before deciding to sell.

I think partially true. SSR ends 2054 regardless of when you buy and all others (AKL excluded) 2042. To your point, there is an advantage to buying SSR (or AKL). Although I'll be darn old in 2054.

Due to the size of Saratoga they still haven't sold up all the inventory. I think the extenstion beyond the regular 40 year period is an attempt to get more sales. Also there are no points left for sale in any of the others anyway. I've noticed a few special offers recently to try and get more sale in Saratoga. I'm expecting more special offers agani soon as once AK comes on the market people will be even less interested in Saratoga. It appears to me people only buy in Saratoga because that is all that is available and not because it is their first choice. I may be wrong here but I doubt it.

Many new DVC owners, myself included, have purchased their memberships from a reseller, existing members selling their membership for one reason or another. They usually have availability at all DVC resorts in varying point totals.

If it were my, I would probably buy at SSR or AKL, just to get the longer contract. I have seen SSR up for resale, not a lot, but there are a few options there. We plan on purchasing more points if/when the Contemporary DVC is announced.

I would take a look at all of them and figure out which resort you would like to stay at if there were no other options available. You can usually get into your home resort no problem with a little planning, so make sure you are fine with your home resort as an option. It doesn't have to be your favorite resort, you just have to be ok with staying there from time to time.

Re: DVC-Which Resort to Pick?

The first decision to make is whether you want to buy from Disney or are happy to use a re-seller.

Re: DVC-Which Resort to Pick?

we bought at SSr because it was the only one available. when the membership expires in 2054, i will be 70+. i am sure Ds will get more use out of it then than i will. we are also going to buy @ contemp when it is made available.....

Me too, but dang it, I'm plan on being there to celebrate my : birthday...well, just being alive.

We actually titled the membership in our names as well as our grown kid's names. That way they are members even when they FINALLY finish college and move out. They will be able to get discounts on AP etc. plus passes for their families when that comes.

We did the same thing considering we'll be pushing a hundred or so when the contract ends. My kids will be older than we are now when the contract ends. Last trip as I walked past the "leave a legacy" things, I thought "we are leaving a legacy, we bought into DVC".

Re: DVC-Which Resort to Pick?

Ok, I am a little confused here, so someone please help me out. I thought you didn't have a choice for "home resort" if you buy directly from Disney, because they are currently only selling SSR. Is this correct? If you buy re-sale, then, obviously you have a choice.

Also, people have mentioned buying additional points, but at other resorts. How does that work?

Hi, I'll try to help. You do not have a choice of home resort from Disney unless two construction activities were to overlap. That is AKL might be being sold and there might be a small amount of SSR left at that time. Re-sale is different as you said. However, be careful, SSR is the 1st resort to have a 2054 end date (vs. 2042 for the rest). The 12 extra years are worth something (to my grandkids).

Additional points at other resorts are again through re-sale. Through Disney, SSR is the only option at this time.

Having said all this, Disney does at times but back contracts when peopl try to sell so you may be able to contact them to get on a waiting list. This, I am unsure about.

Hope this helps.
