Old Key West Resort/DVC

After staying at Beach Club Villas in 2002, I am taking the family to Old Key West this July 12-19. What are the best things about this DVC property? Anything I should not miss? What will the kids like about Old Key West? (ages 13, 8 & 6). Any input on OKW will be appreciated. Thanks! :D :)

I'm interested in hearing about this resort, too! I will be staying there for 4 days in December and I've never been there. It looks like a real "resort" opposed to a hotel!

We bought at Old Key West in Dec of 2000 and visited for the first time in June of 2002.

We found OKW to be absolutely relaxing. We have always stayed at the ALL Stars before that (which I like, too!) but this place is so quite! Transportation was very efficiant, too.

The four of us stayed in a studio (perfect size for us) in building 31, which is right near a "pond" and we could sit on the back porch and over look the sunset and the pond. It was very nice.

We didn't mind being on the 3rd floor, even though there wasn't an elevator. I would probably not have liked that too much if we didn't keep the stroller in the van (which, by the way, is parked right in front of your building).

There were a couple (very minor) things we don't like about OKW.
First, the pool. It's nothing fancy...which is fine, but it is a quite pool after 10:00 pm...which that is when we go swimming every night. (AND trust me...my kids ARE NOT quite!!) Secondly, we like the idea of having a food court, with many selections, which OKW doesn't have. They have Olivias (which we didn't try...it seemed like the prices we just as much as some of our favorite restaurants in the parks, so we skipped them, and they also have a fast food place that serves burgers. So, to solve both of our problems, we drove next door (only 1 minute away) to Port Orleans French Quarter (which is being refurbished right now) and we swam (very fun pool!) and grabbed a snack and refilled our mugs (We bought POFQ mugs) every night.

Since POFQ is closed right now...I would think that Port Orleans Riverside is just another minute down the road and you could swim and eat there.

I can't wait to go back to OKW....and I know you'll love it there, too!

OKW is our home resort, so hopefully I can help. All of the rooms have great views of the Lake Buena Vista golf course, as well as just plain great rooms. There are some fun quiet pools, though the main pool is somewhat of a disapointment.

Make sure that you take a boat to Downtown Disney. The area around the main pool also has some fun things to do. The thing that I like the most about the resort is that it is so relaxing, and it is a great place to get back from the parks and just take it easy for a while.

OKW is our home too. While we have stayed at VWL & BCV and loved them we still are very happy with OKW. (Buy where you stay most is what we did).

We usually stay around the HH so that the kids can walk over to the HH, games area, store and other activities (basketball, tennis, surrey bikes) on the Walkway.

Yes do the boat ride to DtD; in the later afternoon as the sun is going down was our favorite time.

The ability to park right out front of our room and the great view is a big plus.

And as said above, coming back from the parks and just relaxing on your balcony is breath taking.

Enjoy yourselves and have a magical stay.

OWK is our home resort ...

The best thing about OKW is how "away from it all" it is. It really helps to relax the whole crew after a fast paced day in the parks.

As for things to do, check out the schedule of activities when you arrive. Favorites of my kids (good especially for your 8 and 6 yr olds) are the "un-birthday" parties and the fishing trips.

The pool itself is nothing like the one at Beach Club, but they frequently have planned family activities around the pool in the afternoons (music, games, etc.).

To all of you who own at OKW, have you ever been there during Christmas season? I will be staying there for the first time 12/7-12/10, and was wondering how it is decorated for Christmas.

Been there for Christmas Week and the only decorations is a tree in the lobby and a few decorations on the walk at the HH. Other than that, most are in the parks. Try WL, we were there 11/2001 and it was fabulous.

Hey iluvwdw, well will be at OKW at the same time, we will be their from 12/6 thru 12/14. Yesdisneyfool is right that their are not many decorations at OKW, but we typicaly get our fill at the parks.
:)

Thanks YESDISNEYFOOL and SPIKE...I just wanted it to be a little decorated for Christmas...I heard Wilderness Lodge was amazing at Christmas time, but it was a lot more money than we paid at OKW...so I am sure it will be fine! We will only be there from 12/7-12/10, so we will be in the parks most of the time, anyway. And I also want to go to MVMCP, on 12/9...I just haven't ordered tickets yet! I hope they are still available...:nervous

Thanks for all of the comments. They are helpful. I think I'll have to try a Disney Vacation Club resort during Christmas sometime in the future. A nice sunny Christmas day at WDW would sure beat our last Christmas here in Illinois when we were buried in snow!

I thinl one of the best things about the resort is its seclusion. I mean when I had stayed there before it really was very quiet and relaxing. Also the fact that you could park right at the front of where your room was and if you used Disney Transportation, there was one bus dedicated to OKW :D
