How far ahead do you rent DVC points?

I'm just curious for those of you who have rented DVC points before...how far ahead do you tend to plan your trips?

Has anyone successfully snagged a DVC unit only a couple months ahead of time?

We are still so up in the air about whether we're going to DL or WDW this fall, but the idea of not being able to get a 1-bedroom villa if we go to WDW kinda has me freaked out. I just don't think we will be comfortable staying in anything smaller than that; Alice has become the lightest sleeper EVER!

I hope we will know within the next 2 weeks for sure which one we are doing, but I'm still curious how far ahead you guys usually plan?

Re: How far ahead do you rent DVC points?

It really depends on your resort and the time of year. I booked BCV for July at about 6 months out and only had to wait a week or so before my waitlist came through.

f you aren't picky you have a really good chance of getting SSR or OKW on shorter notice.

Great, thanks DT!

I don't think we will be picky this time. Chances are, no matter what we will end up renting a car just to make it easier on us with the stroller. So even OKW would be fine.

We usually rent about 4 months prior to our intended stay.

Okay, awesome! That sounds like a timetable we can definitely fit. We will probably be going in mid-October or early November, and hopefully I will know very soon for sure!

With the exception of Christmas and Easter break I think you can almost always get a room at SSR. It's just SO big and we've seen availability 'on the spot' before. The others I would TRY to book as soon as you possibly can.

Thanks Wishy!!

You guys have all helped me feel a lot better! Of course we have our initial preferences of where we would most prefer to stay, but as long as we can snag something if we decide to go to WDW, I will be a very happy camper!

I think OKW is easy to get into as well.. plus I think it takes fewer points.

On another note...how is the transportation at SSR and OKW?

I don't think we'll exactly be commandos with a baby in tow and me 7 months pregnant () so it's not really an issue, I'm just curious...

At OKW our room happened to be right close to a bus stop. We almost never had to wait. The only issue with OKW is.. it is so large, and has 3 stops (within the resort) when entering and leaving the resort.

Strangely enough, the past two trips have been kinda hard getting into OKW. I think it's getting more popular or something. We couldn't get in there for Thanksgiving week, even calling at 7 months out and we had to "waitlist" OKW for our upcoming October trip! The waitlist already came through but I was actually quite surprised it was originally showing no openings for a studio on our dates.

To be honest, I think the bus service at SSR is one of the best! I NEVER felt like I've waited more than 10 minutes at the most for a bus. The only time I stayed at OKW we had a rental car so I didn't take the buses often enough to form an opinion. SSR is great on transportation though, and it's SO NICE having that pretty boatride to DtD. Daniel and I would crave those Goofy icee drinks at the Candy Store in the Marketplace and we'd hop on the boat and enjoy the icee on the trip back. LOVED IT!

Re: How far ahead do you rent DVC points?

I have rented points as close as 4 months from our check in date, to as much as 11 months from our check in date! I booked 11 months out, simply because I wanted AKV in a Savannah View studio. We are a family of 4, and the studios fit us just fine. But our kids are still young (6 1/2 and 3). I'm sure that will change over time.
