I guess it depends who the trip is booked with. If its with Disney reservations then I think they are fairly lenient. I am sure someone else will be able to help you though.

If you cancel a reservation for a DVC resort between 30 and 1 days prior to check-in, all of the points used to make the reservation will be placed in the Holding Account. Holding account points may not be banked or borrowed, and will expire at the end of your current Use Year if they aren’t used, and the new reservation must be booked within 60 days of your new check-in date.

Are you talking about a DVC resort reservation or just a WDW reservation?

I just had to reschedual my daughters reservations on Friday and she had a package that started on Sunday. As long as we gave them another date they charged her only $50. and applied the rest to her new date in Oct. Not bad

If you are renting points, check your rental agreement. They can and will vary. Some rentals are not refundable. Others are up to a certain point generally less flexible than reqular resort reservations.

Because DVC points have a useful life, so to speak, cancellations can easily mean that the member ends up loosing them.

My rental agreement has full refund less service charge (offsets credit card processing costs etc) up to 35 days, then 75% less service charge 34-8 days and is not refundable after that.

Cancellations in the last month put the points into holding which makes them really hard to rent again, and really limits their use.
