Icon14 Shanghai Disney - 2012

HONG KONG (Dow Jones)--Walt Disney Co. (DIS) plans to open a Disney theme park in Shanghai in 2012, the Hong Kong Economic Times reports.

Citing sources, the report said Disney and the Shanghai government reached an agreement to begin construction of China's second Disneyland in 2008, with a completion date of 2012.

The sources said the park will be four times bigger than Hong Kong's Disneyland, scheduled to open September 12.

However, it is unclear whether the plan will receive regulatory approval from China's central government, according to the newspaper.

The first group of Disney's U.S.-based theme park designers and planners currently in Hong Kong will be moving to Shanghai for preparation of the park, which is expected to begin in mid-2006, the newspaper said.

Disney has said that the company won't rule out the possibility of opening another theme park in China after 2010.

NO WAY!!

Wow...I'm in shock...

That's cool, but at the same time I have mixed feelings, y'know? Don't want the Disney parks to become a dime a dozen!

I really think they should open one Down Under. I would DEFINITELY make a trip to Aussie Disney.

.....Or Arizona, we have plenty of land not being used for anything! We do have some cooler areas also, it's not 120 degrees all over AZ!

Re: Shanghai Disney - 2012

Lots of people?

I thought one of them was struggling? Or was that Paris?

Plus, Asia is really one of the few stable markets. South America is well populated, but there's too much trafficking of different sorts. Australia is lots of space, but not many people, and there's not much else there.

I think they should open another US park before they build yet ANOTHER one in Asia. I think somewhere centrally located would be perfect like lower Missouri or upper Texas.

Re: Shanghai Disney - 2012

If there's gonna be another one in North America, why not in the 4th largest city...Toronto? Sure the temperatures range from -40 to 100, and Air France has problems landing here...but just think of the buying power you Americans would have here! 5-day passes at a legitimate discount!!!

They've tossed around the idea of doming the local Paramount park...and funny enough, it's actually feasible. Plus, DLT gets snow, so it's not impossible. There's still plenty of land to build a park...

OMG, imagine not having to travel 2+ hours by plane in order to go on the Haunted Mansion...now there's something to think about!

I can see why another one in Asia would be the best place for one. Lots of people, absolutely! Though I wish they could put one on some of the other continents first, just to spread them out.

Re: Shanghai Disney - 2012

China (and all Asia for that matter) is an ideal market. It contains billions of consumers in a stable and expanding economy. Just as the opening of Disneyland capitalized on the growth of domestic travel and leisure spending in the US, Hong Kong's Disneyland and successive parks look poised to capitalize on those same trends developing right now in China. Disney's potential reach and profit will increase as capitalism expands in Chinese society. The result, with Disney through its many products (radio, TV, theme parks, etc.) being a catalyst of growth and prosperity in the region, could be Disney becoming a cultural icon within China similar to the status and reverence it holds today in the US and Europe.

Re: Shanghai Disney - 2012

I wish one would open in Canada, but they would need to figure a way of having a Disneyland-in-a-bubble so the extreme weather doesn't put a damper on attendance lol
