Disney Cruise Line cancels November 30 cruise

The Nov. 30 seven-night sailing of the Disney Magic has been cancelled.

"The highest priority at the Disney Cruise Line is the health and welfare of our guests and crew," said Matt Ouimet, president of Disney Cruise Line. "With this as our primary consideration, and recognizing that we continue to see an unusually high number of people experiencing flu-like symptoms, we have decided to cancel the Nov. 30 sailing of the Disney Magic. We have been talking with many experts over the past several days and, based upon their collective advice, our company has made the voluntary decision to take this course of action."

Experts consulting with the cruise line have indicated that the seven-day hiatus, along with additional sanitation procedures that are not possible for a ship in operation, will provide the best opportunity to eliminate the concern going forward.

The Disney Magic will continue to sail the planned itinerary this week, returning to Port Canaveral on Saturday morning. More than 95 percent of the ship's guests remain healthy and, by all accounts, are having a good time. Disney Cruise Line has even offered to fly guests home who have become ill, but so far only one couple has accepted the offer.

Ouimet said the decision was announced Wednesday to provide as much notice as possible to those guests who were scheduled to depart on the Nov. 30 sailing. As a precaution, Disney Cruise Line had already personally contacted many of the guests booked on the upcoming cruise or their travel agents, and asked them to check in on a regular basis via a toll-free number specifically established to provide up to date information no matter where they are this holiday weekend. In addition, the cruise line is also in the process of contacting travel agents and guests directly.

"I understand this will disappoint many families, but we feel this is the right thing to do," said Ouimet.

I'm glad to see that Disney is taking a responsible position concerning the health and safety of the guests.

No, we don't board ship until December 14. I will let everyone know if we hear anything from Disney. It is my understanding that they fully refunded all of the guest's money, as well as gave them 50% off of their next cruise.

I know I am counting down the days!!! I will be so disappointed if we don't get to go but I am hopeful they will have all of this resolved by then. I guess it could really ruin our anniversary to be throwing up and be required to stay in our room. I am glad Disney is doing it's best to keep people happy. Hopefully this nasty virus will be long gone before our trip.
