Space Mountain at Disneyland closed.

Space Mountain at Disneyland has been closed down permanently. Apparently, an inspection last weed indicated major structural damage had occurred, and rather than making the repairs, Disneyland decided to go ahead with the planned rehab. The ride will be reopened to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the parks:

Space Mountain will be redesigned and relaunched in conjunction with the Disneyland 50th Anniversary in 2005. Construction will begin immediately and additions such as new special effects, digital technology, an integrated audio sound system and a completely revamped queue will provide a new level of excitement to Space Mountain.

What does that mean for Space Mountain in DW? Were they built around the same time?

Space Mountain in WDW was rehabbed a few years back. If I remember correctly it was pretty extensive, I know #2 son was bummed that it was closed while he was there with us. They didn't really change anything that I could tell, just freshened it all up and I believe they replaced the track.

Kind of a scary thought. Structural damage? Gee. I just rode that thing last fall. Sure hate to think of how they eventually found the damage.
BTW- does anyone know if they ever opened up the Matterhorn yet?

I don't know if you know that DL is built on sand. The matterhorn has been sinking for years. I don't know if this (& delayed maintainance) has to do w/the major rehaul of SM.

The matterhorn's entryways have been enlarged. Due to accidents of the not using your head & keeping your arms inside kind.

Lap bar trains the culprit?

Hey everyone!!
Just back from honeymoon! (YAY!!! ) and where does a Disney CM goe on Honeymoon? On the Disney Magic, of course!!! :) We had an awesome time and we are planning on going back for a cruise on the Wonder as soon as financially possible

Anyway what I was going to tell you was that possibly the newer "safer" lap bar trains that were added back in the late 80's to early 90's have something to do with the structural damage in question. I used to work the "Mountain" summer of 89-91 and I recally hearing a maintenance person mention something about those trains weighing in at hundreds of pounds more empty than the older seatbelt "sit in your neighbor's lap" trains did full.

Just a thought, I know after hearing that I avoided riding the attraction for a loooong time. Even now, when I ride it, I pray all the way down.

Just a thought

Jenn

The structural damege to SM is from the added soundtrack. It displaced the weight of the cars & made them off balance.

Rode the Matterhorn yesterday!! Yipeee! My fav ride is open again. It was great & the line wasn't bad.

I agree

I've heard on TV News & radio that some inversions may be added to Space Mountain's new layout, much like the Disney Paris Mountain. Any arguements? I may be mistaken...
