Matt, you are the man, not me Brother. I couldn't have said it better myself. I did forget to mention another thing about the stupid Shrek movies that bothers me. Why do they have to keep making such obvious jabs at Disney? If you've seen the movie, or even the preview for Shrek2 you can see the part where the ugly stars are on the beach and Ariel washes ashore. The ugly Shrek chic then picks her up and throws her back in the ocean. That's so lame. I guess there idea is, if you can't beat them, make fun of them. Well, that's just about as funny as a fart joke if ya ask me...not funny at all.

Re: Is Shrek 2 better than any non-Pixar Disney Movie made in the last 10 years?

I think that one thing is being missed here and that is that Jeffry Katzenberg ( I am sure I butchered the spelling of his name), who is the moving force at Dream Works, left Disney because of a very contemptuous relationship with Mr. Eisner. Thus the mildly vailed, or not at all, pokes at everything Disney. If I recall the story correctly, Mr. K left Disney because he believed that Mr. E. and friends were restricting the creative juices at Disney animation.

I love any Disney animated feature but have to say that, with each new movie, the entertainment and creative value of their product is becoming less and less of a quality product. Unfortunately, it looks like the days of the Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Aladin, etc. are in the past and now we are stuck, now that Pixar has firmly walked out of the picture, with Lion King 1 and 1/2, Peter Pan 2, etc.. Where's the creativity??????

Re: Is Shrek 2 better than any non-Pixar Disney Movie made in the last 10 years?

I enjoy a little bit of toilet humor, but cannot even compare Shrek to any Disney movie. It's like comparing nuts to fruit. Different all together. I wasn't offended in the least by the humor in Shrek becasue I knew what to expect from it and for some sick reason I find amusement in that sorta thing..lol It's definately more of an adult cartoon that for kids in my opinion. They can laugh at most of it, but most of the humor is something that only an adult or teen would get. Most of the comedy was lost on my DD. I can't compare that to the laughs we BOTH get from movies like Emporer's New Groove and Hercules. Both were hysterical and our top Disney movies. Mulan is another funny KID'S movie. Again, I love the Shrek movies..they are funny to me, but they aren't exaclty for little, little kids in my eyes.

Dana, I agree. I found that both Shrek and Shrek 2 contained many jokes and references that went over my kids' heads (ages 5 and 8) But there is one reason that both of these movies are good for kids, IMO. The plots of both movies are variations on Beauty & the Beast, in the sense that they enforce the belief that beauty is only skin deep and what's underneath matters most.

I think you misunderstood me. I think the humor wasn't meant for the kiddies. Of course it's ok for them. Sorry if you misunderstood my opinion. When I mean "for them" I meant the jokes etc...sorry bout that. Hard to explain yourself in type sometimes.

Thanks Dana, that's actually what I was agreeing with, that the jokes weren't really meant for small children and most of it went over their heads. I was also responding to previous posters that didn't particularly like Shrek, and I just wanted to say why I did.

A little of both. Some days I feel like a Janet and other days, my brain works like a Crissy...less the snorting laugh.

Re: Is Shrek 2 better than any non-Pixar Disney Movie made in the last 10 years?

I voted "Other..."
I simply can't call Shrek 2 *better* than any Disney movie, because as others have said, it doesn't even compare.

HOWEVER...I will (a little sheepishly) admit that I thought Shrek 2 was hilarious. The over-the-top gross humor got old towards the end, but for the most part I laughed out loud through the whole thing.

I will say the STUPIDEST thing in the entire movie was the "Sir Justin" poster hanging above Fiona's bed. Cameron Diaz and Justin Timberlake are the most ridiculous rebound couple I have ever seen. They don't even look like they're COMFORTABLE around each other, much less LIKE each other! I predict they'll be one of the Hollywood couples to go next. Cameron's obvious little "shoutout" to her boyfriend was childish and SO laughable! ROLLING MY EYES!!

I totally missed this in-joke. I don't usually keep up with Hollywood romances, and never knew that they were an item!

Now I'm sitting here chuckling, because of the now-obvious in-joke.

I did enjoy both movies. I will admit it. I think the second one was far better than the first. However, I know that I won't allow my kids to see it for a while--although I know that my oldest son would think some of the toilet-humor is very funny.

Re: Is Shrek 2 better than any non-Pixar Disney Movie made in the last 10 years?

It's not so much that I don't think the gutter humor is funny. It is.

But it's easy. I tell and hear jokes like that all the time with people that I know in every day life. That type of humor is not real imaginative.

I think that was the point of this thread to begin with. Disney's imagination quotient has dropped, admittedly, over the past few years, but I would never suggest that either of the Shrek movies are better simply because they go for the easy laughs.

Maybe I'm just getting old....

Re: Is Shrek 2 better than any non-Pixar Disney Movie made in the last 10 years?

I agree, Matt. I think it's probably a lot harder to come up with an all-new, all-original idea for a movie.

I do like the idea of re-hashing another movie as an animated adventure, though. I mean, take Hunchback for example. It was a movie a long time before Disney came out with it. While it wasn't a mega-hit, it's still an OK movie--albeit a little too mature for some kids. Maybe they could take some terrific Broadway musicals and change them without changing the basic story (Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, A Chorus Line, you get the idea). Not have all the harsh portions from some of the shows, but use the basic storyline as an idea. Can't you just see a crowd of cats doing the basic story from A Chorus Line--where they're trying to get to be in the "show" that performs on a fence or in an alley every night?

I also really liked Treasure Planet. I like that idea of taking a classic book and turning it into a sci-fi story. Maybe they could do the same thing with Moby Dick or something along those lines???

They just need to get their thinking caps on and do something awesome!

Just an idea...
