Icon5 Is Shrek 2 better than any non-Pixar Disney Movie made in the last 10 years?

10 years, so many duds. Is Shrek 2 better than all of the non-Pixar movies since the Lion King?

Here is the list:

Pocahontas
Hunchback of Notre Dame
Hercules
Mulan
Tarzan
Fantasia 2000
Emperor's New Groove
Atlantis
Lilo and Stitch
Treasure Planet
Brother Bear
Home on the Range

Re: Is Shrek 2 better than any non-Pixar Disney Movie made in the last 10 years?

By the way, here is something of interest. This is the total US gross ticket movie sales for each movie. It does not include worldwide revenue or video/DVD sales:

Pocahontas ($145 million)
Hunchback of Notre Dame ($99 million)
Hercules ($150 million)
Mulan ($120 million)
Tarzan ($171 million)
Fantasia 2000 ($60 million)
Emperor's New Groove ($89 million)
Atlantis ($84 million)
Lilo and Stitch ($145 million)
Treasure Planet ($38 million)
Brother Bear ($85 million)
Home on the Range ($50 million)

Shrek 2 did over $140 million in the first 10 days.

I have to say that while I don't think all of those movies listed are duds, (okay, some are) none of them hold a candle to Shrek 2.

I loved Tarzan and the Emperor's New Groove, but Shrek 2 was even better than they were. Dreamworks next movie, Shark Tale, looks like it'll be pretty good too.

I think a few of on your list were "duds" like Atlantis and Home on the Range. I don't think Shrek2 was better than Mulan, Brother Bear, Lilo & Stitch, & Tarzan.

I do think Shrek2 was better than all the others on your list, though.

Re: Is Shrek 2 better than any non-Pixar Disney Movie made in the last 10 years?

Well, I guess I shouldn't have commented on Atlantis as being a "dud"...I never saw but 15 min or so of it....I should give it a chance and sit through it from beginning to end. And on Home on the Range...I tried to like it...I wanted to like it....but for some reason...I just didn't. On the other hand, my entire family (other than myself!) just adored it and thought it was really good.

I agree--except I haven't seen Home on the Range yet. The worse dud (IMO) out of that list was Hunchback. I just couldn't get into it like I could the others. It didn't strike me as a real kids movie.

But as I said, I agree with BDavis. I don't think it was better than Mulan, Brother Bear, Lilo & Stich, and Tarzan. Maybe just as good, but not better.

These movies were better than Shrek 2: Pocahontas, Hercules, Mulan, Tarzan, Lilo & Stitch & Hunchback of Notre Dame.

I gotta tell ya, I really don't think Shrek was very funny at all. It was all just one big fart joke, and I don't find that kind of humor funny at all. It's just not funny... IMO, none of the Shrek stuff can hold a candle to any Disney movie, regardless of what the box office numbers say.

Dewey! Brother! You are the man!

Thank God I'm not alone in this.

While I found Shrek mildly entertaining, it was entirely disrespectful to just about everything. (I haven't seen Shrek 2, but I imagine that it's more of the same.)

Actually, I think Eddie Murphy is the funniest thing about Shrek. He's one of the most under-rated comic actors in Hollywood.

Listen, I'm not really into Politically Correct anything and I can appreciate the humor in Shrek. But it's so over the top and constant. Not to mention that it's exactly the same story line as every Disney movie ever made. Dreamworks simply brought it down a few levels so that everyone can laugh at the gutter humor. No originality whatsoever.

I think it's ironic that there were so many people that got bent out of shape over some of the implied sexual content in Hunchback and yet the bathroom humor in Shrek and Shrek 2 is considered perfectly appropriate.

In the end, I'm not terribly impressed with many of the so-called children's movies that have come out over the last few years, from any studio. Many of the Disney movies have been pretentious and other studios only know a handful of jokes that get repackaged year after year. Pixar has done a much better job at bringing Disney back to its roots. Too bad Eisner didn't agree. Why can't Disney make more movies like Philharmagic? Now THAT'S a great Disney film, even without the special effects.

Lilo & Stitch was a great film, but it was a little bit preachy. I don't need Disney or anyone else to tell me how life should be lived. I just want to be entertained. Show me an adventure where the hero conquers a monster. Show me an historic battle when good triumphs over evil. Do it with class. Do it without gutter humor.

It's funny too. I mentioned Eddie Murphy earlier. When he was young, he used to poke fun at Bill Cosby for not cursing in his stand-up routine. When's the last time you saw Eddie Murphy in an R-Rated comedy? Life, being a parent, etc. teaches us what's really impartant in life. Risque humor is fine, but if that's all you know, it shows a true lack of originality and effort.

Just My Not So Humble Opinion.

Re: Is Shrek 2 better than any non-Pixar Disney Movie made in the last 10 years?

I have to go with Matt on this one. He stated it as good as I could have, and that said, I don't think that Shrek or Shrek 2 holds a candle to Mulan (I adored Eddie Murphy as Mushu - too funny), Hercules, Pocahontas, or any other Disney film in the catalog. Robin Williams as the Genie in Aladdin why can't they come up with an original idea like that again?

I will now go be hit with paper wads by my DD who has seen both Shrek movies and loves them. I have not seen them and refuse to. They just aren't my style.

I don't believe I have seen any of those movies listed.
ps New software seems perplexing at first. But look at all the wasted white space on every screen. Too bad.
