Pin question
I was wondering if the Cast Members purchase their pins or if Disney gives them the lanyards. The reason I ask is on our last trip I saw a shift change where a CM handed his pin loaded lanyard over to another CM who relieved him.

(a little Disney magic) So, I think they are provided with pins and can switch them out as needed so that their lanyard isn't full of the same kind! Welcome to MouseBuzz.
I have heard the CMs can grab a lanyard from a bin at the start of their shift. I don't know if it's true or not but I' sure they don't have to buy the pins. By the way, pin trading is our favorite way to meet CMs.

Yup I believe they are given the pins as well. I don' think they have to pay for them out of pocket.

I have never had enough nerve to ask a CM to trade buy my son and niece have....I atleast get to make some small talk while the kids wheel and deal!

When we went on the Keys to the Kingdom tour at MK we saw the little "store" where CM can go to get pins. I am pretty sure they didnt have to pay for them. But i could be wrong.

When I did the "Keys to the Kingdom" tour, like Bransworld mentioned above, we went into the utilidors. I saw a small area with a counter that was all decorated and it turned out to be a "pin store" of sorts for CMs. They had big boxes of pins, and well there were just pins everywhere. Our tour guide said that's where CMs go to "refresh" their pins & turn in any 'fakes' they find, etc. They do not have to pay for them.

Yes, CMs can get lanyards and pins (I think they "check them out"). Our daughter just finished the College Program and she had a lanyard with pins that she traded with people. She had access to it, didn't have to buy it, but turned it in when her program was over. It is(was) a great way for CMs to interact with guests.

It seemed most CM's were wearing the pin, and they are not allowed to trade for a pin they are already wearing. I actually had fun with the goal of hunting for CM's I could trade with for ANY pin. We were at WDW for 7 days--I got rid of my last pin as we were leaving the resort on our last day!

No they don;t have buy the pins. The can go to company D where they can purchase pins that are only avaiable to cast members. I had a friend that used to work at DL and took me to Company D a few times, the also get free pins if they work special things like holidays etc. but these are not the ones normally found on the lanyards that they trade with while working.

Thanks for the info! I just got into purchasing pins this year. I let everyone in my party pick the pins for me so they all have sentimental value. My SIL bought me a Jedi Mickey pin, which I already had, for driving her to the parks with us. I don't remember what ride we were getting on but as we were standing there an older CM walked over and held out his lanyard and wanted to trade. I gave up my Jedi Mickey for a really cool Disneyland Castle with four windows that had pictures of the princesses in them. If you tipped the castle on its side, the windows slide over and reveal more princesses!

We buy pin lots on Ebay to trade, and though we are a bit picky, I have gotten great pins on Ebay, many I dont want to trade! We start with full lanyards of random pins and try to trade for ones we like. We have a good mix of limited editions, odd balls and ones that we just "like". Our kids LOVE the interaction with the CMs, sometimes we spend LOTS of time in the parks chatting with CMs while the kids trade. We have rarely purchased pins that we have seen on CMs, many times they comment on what great pins we have.
The CMs do seem to like this part of their job...most are very friendly and you really find out how small the world really is! This year, we have so many, we purchased a book to put our "keepers" in and have our lanyards ready to trade!
