Fake pins?

Had no idea there was such a thing until I read an article on an auction site.

Is there a "quick" way to recognize a fake or a real pin. I'll take either or for help.

Not a collector, just don't like thieves.

Re: Fake pins?

the back of the fake pins are dull silver...and have a "pocked" pattern on them...we ran across one on our last trip.

DD traded for it...she got it from a CM...but she traded it again later to another CM...i let DD trade whatever she wants for whatever she wants...they are her pins...she has the taste of a 5yo...so she doesn't always make what i think is a great trade...but as long as she is happy about it..we are all good! lol

Re: Fake pins?

After years of watching my son trade I've gotten pretty good at spotting the fake pins, they just look cheap. We only let him trade with CMs so I don't worry too much but he's gotten one or two over the years.

Re: Fake pins?

we only trade with cm's too - but dd got an obvious fake once - it was peter pan, and she just HAD to have it, but it was much lighter weight than the real ones, and looked almost plastic. but, she's 5 - she didnt care.

Re: Fake pins?

Aren't the fake ones usually called Sedesma pins or something like that? I know a lot of times on Ebay good sellers will actually label them as Sedesma pins.

Those are the ones we've seen. They look like plastic and are very light weight., easy to tell from an official pin most of the time. They also don't have the pin trading logo on the back.

On the nosey that is what they are called....most collectors will not trade for them.....and Disney usually will not trade for them unless it is a little one wanting to trade....

Re: Fake pins?

I had never thought of there being fake pins around. I will let the Mrs. know so she will be careful should she decide to trade. Right now, we just buy pins on WDW property at the retail places like Pin traders or at the resorts, etc.

Re: Fake pins?

Do the fake ones still have the logo or whatever is on the back that is supposed to make them legit to trade with CMs?

Re: Fake pins?

some fake pins do have the logo on the back.

I have been pin trading now for 2 1/2 yrs and I can tell when a pin is fake by just looking at it.

there are many ways! and I mean MANY ways to tell if they are fake!

if its a regular rack pin. meaning they are sold on the shelves of stores. the way to tell fakes from real ones is by looking at the back. the backs usually have the disney emblem on the back saying official disney pin trading and the year the pin was produced and it should read clearly. I once fell in love with this pin on a lanyard and it was mickey when I looked on the back it said lilo & stitch that was the fakest pin I had ever seen.

for the hidden mickey's it takes a little bit more skill. the hidden mickeys have to be a certain size and not too fat and big looking. I have found some cast lanyards that on the back of the pin don't say they are cast lanyards and they are supposed to say it so those are fake. for the hidden mickeys they can be determined by the way they look. by the colors they consist of, and usually a section of the pin that is supposed be colored in is just blank and has excess metal without color.

the easiest way to tell if the pins are fake or not is by the color of the pin or also when you look at the pins they are supposed to be glossy and smooth most of the fakes don't have gloss and are not smooth.

the sedesma pins are pins that look OLD! but im talking about OLD! they are easily reproduced since usually they look like they are in a bad condition. these are more simple looking pins that are solo full body characters.

if anyone needs any info on pins I will be more than glad to answer any questions. just PM me.

Re: Fake pins?

Thanks for the info. This last trip in March was the first time we started collecting the pins. It's great fun and we just love the variety.

Re: Fake pins?

It's important to know that there are official Disney trading pins that are silver, and even some on copper-colored, backs. But they are clearly stamped on the back, and you will be able to see the Disney copyright symbol or other identifying mark.
