Re: Capt. Jack Sparrow lives?

He was cursed because he stole some of the treasure so he could not die right? It's been a while since I watched it, so I'm not 100% sure.

Re: Capt. Jack Sparrow lives?

I believe it happens at the same time as the coin is being returned ,so all bets are off......remember he had the curse but was not on the mutiness ship and even though he had the curse but did not die ...sam ecurse but different if that makes any sense

Re: Capt. Jack Sparrow lives?

the pirates had returned all the treasure, but before they could splill blood to remove the curse, Jack stole one of the coins, thus cursing himself until that one coin was returned and the blood spilled.

OK, I STILL don't get it. I am going to have to watch that movie another zillion times now to figure it out. Of course, watching Johnny Depp isn't exactly a chore, right ladies? But I really want to understand the ending!!!

Re: Capt. Jack Sparrow lives?

Just because he was cursed doesn't mean he was dead. Look at the other pirates--none of them died, either. Except of course the "Captain", but then he deserved it. True, they looked like they were dead, but they weren't really. The captain explained it while talking to Elizabeth at dinner. They couldn't feel/taste anything anymore. If they returned all the gold, then the curse would be lifted, and they would be normal (alive) again. While they were cursed, they COULDN'T die.

And they weren't really all that old, either. Look at Jack. He wasn't cursed throughout most of the movie. And, before the mutiny that got him dropped off, they weren't cursed either. It was after that point that the curse was placed upon them. The curse just made them LOOK like they were really, really old dead pirates.

Re: Capt. Jack Sparrow lives?

The key is that the skeletons aren't dead, they're just skeletons. Skeletons in the moonlight, that is, and cursed "normal-looking" undead (they can't die) when the moon isn't shining on them. After the curse was lifted the skeletons returned to normal, living, mortal (killable) people and quickly began being slaughtered by the British soldiers. They apparently weren't in much of a position to defend themselves at that point, as the change obviously caught them somewhat by surprise. You'll notice that those that aren't killed drop their weapons and surrender. They're not dead either. So Jack was never dead, just briefly cursed so that he could outwit Barbosa. The real question is why does Barbosa die from a bullet that had already passed through him while he was still a skeleton? Shouldn't his restoration to mortality have rendered him healthy and well? That one I can't answer. My guess is it's a timing issue. Since the bullet had just barely passed through him he was still vulnerable. Still, Mr. Vidal could have settled the question easily by simply having the coin land in the chest as the shot fires, instead of after.

Hmmm... That's a different way of looking at it for me. I just assumed that the bullet was lodged in Barbosa's body before the curse was lifted. True, the hole should have disappeared (something I've wandered about myself), but I just took it as there hadn't been enough time for it to "heal" before the lifting of the curse.

(Man, I've got to quit analyzing this movie...! It's just a terrific movie! )
